Is it any wonder they don't know anything?

That the kids and public today have a badly warped sense of what a martial art even is.

Snake oil, snake oil everywhere I look!

What do you think of this one?

Update:

Donald: Thanks for that link. I only read some and skimmed the rest for now. An interesting read.

Man of Faith: Thanks for posting my long-winded rant for me! Lol, it is idiots like this selling bs that drive me nuts.

firstmanever: sorry Buddy, imagine how I feel after more than 40 years! How right you are, it is in the kata if you know how to find it.

Leo L : isn't it.

Johnathan Pierson: Kind of funny, except that people who know no better believe that foolishness.

Update 2:

LIONDANCER: You always give such good, and straight answers, thank you. And I agree with you too. You and I have been around some of those blocks, but new people lose their potential over this stupidity. I can't change much of it, but if one young person reads this question, and begins to "get it" it was worthwhile.

There's enough snake oil just on the front page to last us all a lifetime. It reminds me of what many McDojos preach - "Our way is the only style that's 100% effective!"

My martial arts teacher has been a martial artist for approx. 30 years. He used a lot of the techniques he learned in martial arts when he taught hand-to-hand combat in the U.S. Marine Corps (and if you're familiar with the U.S. Marines at all, you know that's no light boasting, especially since Marines have to, among other things, be trained to handle full-blown combat situations where, like when out on the street, there's a good change opponents won't follow any rules). A lot of what he learned from martial arts (and has taught both in the Marines and in his martial arts classes) is the very stuff that this website claims martial arts *can't* teach you (i.e. dealing with multiple simultaneous opponents, or what to do when the other guy pulls out a weapon), and often without having to use the "nerve stuff" the website is trying to pitch.

There actually is some truth to some of the things the guy says about Kali. In Kali you do spend a lot of time training to fight someone else trained in Kali. I did a bit of Arnis, and I noticed that. In Kajukenbo, which is a Filipino Hawaiian martial art, the knife and stick defenses reflect more how an untrained person with the intent of killing you would actually use a knife or stick.

The only Kenpo available in the U.K. is Ed Parker's American Kenpo. My style Kajukenbo is based on the same Hawaii Kenpo that Ed Parker's American Kenpo is based on. I can imagine that if Kajukenbo is available in the U.K., he would write that while Kajukenbo is a great martial art, Kajukenbo doesn't have any techniques against multiple opponents, Kajukenbo doesn't have any techniques for attacks coming from the side, and that Kajukenbo doesn't have any techniques against attackers with knifes, and that you have to Buy my course.

He didn't write that, but even if the did, what can you do? He has to write to express his opinion. But Kajukenbo people also have the right to visit his school or his office or his home office and challenge him to back up his claims.

While some of the things he writes has some truth to it, he is using sensationalism to sell his courses, and if consumers fall for his advertising and buy his courses, real martial artists are not responsible for anything that happens to the purchasers if they actually do have to use what they learned in the course in a real street confrontation.

Someone who really wants to learn the truth will not place all their trust in just one person shooting their mouth, one article or one website and eventually find out what is right. So stuff like that does not phase me anymore.

If you think snake oil is a modern development you are mistaken. I met much snake oil in China too. There were family clans dating back hundreds of years who prided themselves selling snake oil. They were the gypsies of China, settled down did some tricks to get some money and then moved on when people caught on. Snake oil is as old as human kind. Just now with modern media we find more snake oil but at the same time we also have access to good information as Donald has shown. Sometimes it takes a while to separate the two but if we continue to keep an open mind and continue to learn and not pretend to know everything we will eventually find the truth and learn to see through the scams.

It's funny, I read the link you gave, and thought to myself that the guy doesn't seem to be pitching anything other than some nerve thing. But then I read all of the other articles about the other styles, and every article was identical in content with the exception of one paragraph dedicated to the style he was comparing to.

Reading only one article, I got the impression he is a clueless boob. But after reading the other articles, nothing changes. Except that it's clear he's just pitching for something else. The thing is, all of the articles are so shallow and devoid of detail, one can't help but think his snake oil is just as devoid of substance.

It is sad. He'll probably market this to reach the naive, and then the rest of the world who knows better has to play clean up.

Oh no! Damn the traditional karate I've been doing for the last 25+ years has been exposed! Thank you Jim R for leading me to this website where I can learn "nerve attacks" that work 100% of the time!

I didn't go any further then the linked page but, these people are just blow hards. Their stuff might even be effective and legitimate but, it won't be anything that any of us haven't seen already. Once again, there is really nothing "new" out there everything you see can be traced back to TMA and its katas.

    I. Died. Laughing. When I clicked on Kali (style that I practice) and it says how "when you don't have a weapon, you can't use Kali". Well Eskrima is the term for armed combat, but Kali is the empty-handed form, using the same movements and concepts, but applied to hand to hand boxing. Hilarious.

I am, however, concerned because I do know nerve attacks and they are not for playing. There's a reason why they are illegal in MMA competitions and it can be lethal if used the wrong way. I really hope these idiots are bluffing about knowing these things because they are simply wrong in every way.

Also, JKD is not a style, it is a philosophy. And a JKD "practitioner", if we can even call someone that does have a ground-game. So this website is truly the bane of my existence.

The link is sad and funny at the same time. It assumes that the person reading it has not thought about the fact that on the left side of the web page is a long list of different fighting arts (except for Jeet Kune Do which is not an art but a philosophy, Bruce Lee even said so himself,........ Duh!) Listing them as this or that exposed. Anyone with half a brain would know that no one, and I do mean no one knows a thimble fun of information about any of the arts. So they can;t possible know much about all the arts listed. Are we supposed to take the author of that silly trash serious? Obviously, the only people that would respond to that web site are children.

As for kids today, and their warped ideas about the martial arts. How can they have any real understanding of what real martial arts are about. Consider this short list of reasons why they are so confused: (Note: many adults are as confused as the children)

    * We have 99 McDojo out there on every corner claiming to teach self defense for ever legitimate martial arts school. Most are really teaching children nothing. They play games and run around. Every few weeks or months they are given some test that involve no realistic self-defense at all. Yet they are promoted to the next belt (assuming they have attended classes, and paid their fees).

    * We have so many schools that sell black belt contracts. They promote the students rapidly to that rank so the contract will end and they can then sell them another one.

    * We have Teen Age Ninja Turtles, Power Rangers, and all manner of Anime depicting ridiculous things in the name of martial arts.

    * We teach through cartoons and Anime that it is possible to shoot fireballs from our hands.

    * We have so many movies where martial arts is depicted as the person using them being almost invincible. Movies like the Jason Born, The Transporter, ...etc. depict a few real techniques combined with tons of choreographed gymnastics that we constantly bombard anyone watching movies and TV with unrealistic and impractical beliefs.

    * We have lots of guys that see a few things and then decide that they know enough and are smarter than those that practiced real arts for decades. These same children then go about thinking that they can or have created some better fighting system. (Yet no one has ever heard of any becoming famous due to their supposed fighting skills. Other than background fighting with their friends, they can be seen often on sites like Youtube)

    * We have web site out there claiming to be objective about martial arts who really are nothing more than groups of members that do nothing but talk about how everyone else and their styles don't work.

    * We have misquoted statistics saying that most fights go to the ground. (Note: the original statistics that said that were not talking about the average fight. It was meant to reflect what police officers often deal with when apprehending a suspect that is resisting arrest.)

    * We have things like the Gracies who no one had ever heard about a few years ago. Then they got a lot of publicity and became overnight celebrities after showing fights where they supposedly proved their style against many different traditional styles. (However, it is common knowledge that the Gracies hand picked who they would fight.)

    * We have in recent years been bombarded by people saying that Karate is a striking art, judo is a grappling art, and other incorrect comments.

    * We have young guys saying that they have overcome the flaws in traditional MA by taking the best of different arts. (Yet old timers like me know and have been practicing traditional arts fro decades. We were doing all the same things then. we just did not call it anything special. We knew that our arts had striking, kicking, joint locking, throwing, ground grappling, ...etc. We know this because we were practicing all those thing within our styles way back in time.)

This is only the surface of the problem....

It made me chuckle reading Karate, MMA, Brazilian jiujitsu, and pressure points exposed.

It's like no art was ever devised with the idea of self protection in mind.

I guess Karate's lack of ground fighting means that Unsu, Kusanku, etc are wrong...

Man, who do these old Okinawans think they're fooling? Only these guys have mastered Karate, Jiujitsu, Kenpo, etc and seen the flaws of each style!

Guess I need to study this new, improved, and the only effective art.

lol that guys a well known fraud like matt furey it's all a load of crap.

everyone who does real aikido knows it has ground fighting

anyone who has gone past 1st degree black belt in bjj knows it has striking (how many do that??? lol)

anyone who has been to a real karate dojo knows it has ground fighting

people are retarded for believing this guy is all I can say

    this is my fav:

"Jeet Kune Do is extremely effective in close combat situations, but... What happens If the attacker takes you to the ground? You can’t use Jeet Kune Do techniques if you are knocked to the ground. Jeet Kune Do doesn’t have any techniques to stop an attacker in this situation."

but bruce lee trained in wrestling, judo & jujutsu... and larry hartsell was a master judoka & dan inosanto is a bjj black belt so I don't see where people get that there is no ground fighting in jeet kune do/jun fan gung fu...

and don't forget about Chris Clugston (http://luchador.webspawner.com/) who can teach you to fight like a viking and like an ancient celtic warrior from roman times with his gladiator fighting methods and he has the ultimate combat jkd they don't wan;t you to learn... but he's from my city and he showed up at my gym and couldn't even demonstrate proper basics or develop any real power in his strikes an he seemed like a high school wrestler who knew a bit of muay thai to me and he wasn;t good at either lol

Source(s): martial arts training since 1997 & these guys give me a good laugh but too bad many people see them as real masters when they are clearly nothing more than chumps

The sad thing here is that there are people out there that are gullible enough to actually believe this guy. I feel sorry for anyone who gets killed or seriously hurt in a self defence situation following this guy's advice.

The Vulcan Neck Pinch will not help you defend yourself.
