Re.St. Valentines Day?

Question

St. Valentine's day is a custom which allows for people to express their affection or admiration or love to another of their choice. However, I was disappointed to read in a Christian Magazine that Christians of their own blend should avoid this custom because it allegedly gives place to expressions of lust; the inference is that its pagan origins remain to this day and so the type of love the custom expresses is apparently imbued with a pagan/carnal type of love which Christians can't avoid. I was astonished and disappoint red that Christian Leaders would broadcast such an untruth.

This is completely laughable yet sad.  Why a Christian Magazine or just a Christian take such a judgmental stance is beyond me.  If they want to attack the commercialism of Valentines day, then OK.  But to let any day win out over Paganism is not right.  If that day is rich in Paganism, the more I wish to bring a Christian connotation to it. 

Really, I just can't see a valentine causing lust.  I mean, if my wife is wearing a heart on her shirt and lures me into the bedroom.  Believe me it's not the valentine I'm thinking about!  Nor is it the valentine that is getting us worked up!  It's that God given emotion that a man and wife have for each other that is working in us.  

I share your disappointment...  I guess I will just have to tell my wife "the devil made me do it"

Valentine's Day has more links with Courtly Love and Romantic Love - not sexual love.  The purity of loving from afar.

I have been sending my husband a Valentine's card for 45 years - it reassures him that I love him.  He is my soul-mate.
