Is this a fair tax system?
I'm a Middle Class citizen here making 12 dollars an hour -- living on my own, have my own insurance, and retirement, no dependents. I'm single and 25 years old, don't qualify for food stamps or any sort of government housing incentives.
Anyway the point of this question is that I filled my taxes, and I guess I claimed 1 more deduction than I should on accident and now owe the government 480 dollars. Bummer right? I think when I mail my check to the IRS I will personally send them a letter to make that damn tax-code and W4 forms WAY more simplified to prevent the confusion.
Anyway... I don't qualify for food stamps, or any sort of government housing projects. I pay the maximum amount the government can take from me and on normal years I break even, and don't get much of a tax return.
What bothers me is how someone can have 2 kids, make as much money as I do, draw food stamps, and other government welfare programs not pay a cent into federal income tax and get like 8 thousand dollars back of incentives... Meanwhile someone like me pays in the most, gets back nothing.
How the hell is that fair people? No I'm not making this up, it's a fellow coworker I work with has been talking about for days how her going to take the kids out to Chucky Cheese, go here and there, and take the dead beat husband who's never had a job in his life to a gambling boat.
Basically because I don't have 12 kids, have a deadbeat partner I don't get thousands back in incentives right?
The morality of this is just flat out wrong people. It's people like that that take our tax dollars and go out and live like kings on them but I don't get a single grimy penny back on a normal year. I'm at a loss of words for this -- pretty much this amounts to flat out thievery.
@Bill. It was a figure of speech.
Regardless if you have 2 kids, or 12. The point I was trying to get across is that you shouldn't have more babies than you can afford. Whether it be 1 child, 2, or 12. You don't spend more than you make because when you do, when there are children involved I end up getting hit with the bill.
I deserve more in life and if I can't afford kids of my own how the heck can I support taking care of other peoples kids...
It's not fair for people like me to get the blunt end of this tax system simply because I have no dependents, or anything. I pay the max the government is able to take from me and I get back nothing.

There is nothing fair about taxes.
You are just getting started.
Some people work all their lives, either as an employee or as an employer, and the government takes everything they have because they need to pay their 'fair share', while other people scam the system all their lives
And that doesn't even count the millions who spend their whole lives living 'on the edge' because of government taxes and spending.

Liberal policies penalize you for being successful and reward you for failing.
There are Millions who are on unemployment because with that, plus food stamps, plus utility assistance, plus Obamaphone, plus "family assistance"...
They are literally better off not working, than working a job like yours. Why work ?
Oh.. and they'll get a "refund" between $3,000-4,000 as well, despite not paying any income taxes at all. (that's wealth redistribution)I saw it every year while working at the bank.
Nice huh?
So, the answer to your question, is no. It is not fair.
Ironically, I am for the Fair Tax:
-No more IRS, you never file
-You get 100% of your paycheck
-All taxes are paid based on what you SPEND not what you earn
-Every American gets a "pre-bate" check each month to refund taxes paid on essentials
-Built into the states sales tax system at the retail level.
-The entire tax code is 136 pages long vs over 60,000 pages

The tax code is not fair. And the lawmakers have no plans to change it since they got too favors for the people to give them their donations to keep happy.

Sounds like the tax code is just fine. It is the benefits part that is screwed up.

Because you have done the right thing our government wants you to be punished for it.
We reward failure in this country.
