Why are people buying up all the ammunition?

Is it paranoia or greed?

Update:

Good Lord people, the government isn't buying 22 shells up by the millions, the people are. As far I know, no one has mentioned banning anything but assault type weapons. As for you that choose to insult me, I am a gun owner that is pissed off that I can't buy ammunition, so kiss my @ss you radical bastards.

    People are nervous.....

Some are paranoid.... Some see a faltering economy..... One elderly lawyer I know said a revolution is coming..... Some are worried about gun rights being restricted..... Some are worried about serious looming inflationary problems..... Other disillusioned types have even mentioned a zombie Apocalypse.....

    Take your pick......

A little of both perhaps. Although paranoia refers to a sense of mistrust without justification. People are worried that our government is overstepping its authority and slowly stripping us of our rights, particularly, our gun rights: a law against this accessory (like a pistol grip) or a 10 round magazine here, a law against the amount of ammunition you can buy there, until we are not citizens anymore, but subjects, rendered defenseless. I think by now it's anything but unjustified because they have done and are doing just that. Therefore I think it has become less paranoia and more truth and preparation.

As far as greed, each person buying up ammunition just wants to be stocked up because with everyone else doing the same, there won't be much left over to purchase, especially before new laws take effect and law-abiding citizens can no longer by a box of friggin' .22 shells to go plinking or chuck hunting without getting a background check and sending up red flags.

Fear that the government is going to start tracking ammo sales, and limiting how much you can buy. That has already happened in NY State, as of a few days ago. NY now also limits magazine size to 7 or less, and NOTHING is grandfathered. In a year or so, you'll have to either sell your semi-auto rifle with a magazine (and one other "military" characteristic) to someone outside the State, or turn it in. Or else. Same with magazines carrying over ten rounds .... and you can only carry 7 in those 10-rounders in the meantime. Look up the New York SAFE Act. What a misnamed crock of sh**. And unless they fix it, ALL semi-auto pistols will have to be registered as assault weapons, since they have one of the listed "characteristics" -- a pistol grip. Insane, but of course it's New York.

It's not paranoia if they really ARE intending to outlaw almost all guns and limit your ammo.

Paranoia? Hell no it's reality. The DHS bought 1.6 billion rounds of hollow point ammo and ordered another 26 million. People are refusing to keep their heads in the sand. I got this info first hand. Here it goes. The ammo companies, had that govt. order to fill. That's a heckuva lotta bullets friend. They started to work that order, and that caused a bit of a shortage of components ( primers mainly ). Ammo companies tried to maintain the store shelf quantity as well. Then DC started chatter about gun confiscation ( call it what it is now), and people automatically thought ammo for this or that firearm was gonna be in short supply, so they started buying more than they actually needed. I reload and couldn't find a primer anywhere, even online. I managed to find 1000 and the cost was 29 bucks. Well, I had to pay S/H charges, 18 bucks, plus a hazmat fee 27 bucks. So in doing the math you find that it is waayyyyy more expensive to order primers online than at your local shop. The govt. is definitely threatening to take something from us, in the way of guns. They evidently do not understand the part about "shall not be infringed" or they just don't give a rat's hind quarters. I think it is the latter . That info I gave ya was given to me by a ammo manufacturer worker that I know personally, therefore I will not reveal his name. Several factors led to the shortage, I have been told that things may return to normal around the latter part of this year if things stay the same.

    Neither.

Paranoia would indicate that they see something that isn't true. Considering that many Democrats and leftists have openly stated that they want to ban guns, or some guns, or certain ammo, or certain magazines, there is no paranoia in play. There is a legitimate threat to firearm ownership, even if that threat is minuscule.

Greed? Not a chance. If greed were at work, people wouldn't be paying premium prices for something they could have bought three months ago for a much lower price.

That being said, I haven't gone out to buy a bunch of ammo. I have enough to last for months already, considering that I don't use much.

Fear. People are afraid that some types of ammunition might be outlawed, or that legislation might be imposed to drive the price of ammunition out of the practical range for shooters to afford! Both avenues have been proposed but not accepted as of yet!

its not greed for the most part, and paranoia suggests there isnt a threat to our rights to own guns and ammo, and its obvious that there is .. i do think some people over-do it somewhat, if you need more than several clip-fulls you aint winning lol .. i mean what are you gonna do with thousands of rounds of ammo fight off the marauding hordes whilst barracaded in your survival tent? .. i dont think so ..

The zombie apocalypse, which from this point on shall be known as "zombiepox" to shorten it and make typing it out quicker.

Anyhow, when the zombiepox outbreak happens, people want to be able to shoot the zombies, instead of being eaten alive by them. Having ammo on hand kinda falls into the zombiepox equation.

The frequent shooters tend to mostly buy ammo in bulk or they re-load, so for the most part, they are not part of the panic buying of ammo that is going on.

So anyone panic buying will tend to be a new shooter or someone thinking they can grab as much ammo as they can, and list it on forums and sales sites for more than they paid for it, or that it is worth, to the real panic buyers.

Apparently you haven't been keeping up with the news much lately.

Its not individual citizens that have been buying up the total production of commercial ammo producers for the past year, ITS THE U.S.DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY!
