It could border or be fanaticism. =] http://www.thefreedictionary.com/fanaticism
I'd say that a lot of sport's fans can become devoted to their teams like that. It's an emotional attachment to whom they admire, root for. Root for & admire the good guys. I don't see it being abnormal. I see it as more of a constructive, worthwhile focus than sports or becoming obsessed/fanatical over some "stars"/"famous" people. Which really police can be seen as "stars", well, they are heroes. How many people obsess over comic characters like Batman, Spiderman, etc.? My grampa loved old Westerns & watched them "constantly". Good guys "always" won & rode off into the sunset as heroes. Even on Spiderman, Aunt May said, "Everyone loves a hero." Some people are like that with fireman; especially, when a family member is serving. Or with military members, some display an overly amount of patriotism with flags, support our troops symbols, etc. It will depend on how involved they've ever been, and attachment can become stronger. I'd say it's pretty common, at least, for those that want to serve. Even for ones that cannot, they can still become obsessive w/admiration. =]
Some people are not athletic but completely in love w/the sport & some sports' figures. They watch 'em "all" the time. Hootie & Dan Marino & the Dolphins. My Dad was "hugely" fanatical over the 49ers & Joe Montana to the point that when Montana transferred to the Chiefs, he had to start watching & rooting for the Chiefs, too. =] (He would get literally upset if someone spoke against them -49ers or Joe Montana! -My grampa, w/his Packers, liked to but.t heads w/my Dad's fanatacism.) I tend to be fanatical obsessive, too, once I get attached. I'm a very devoted, faithful person when I become interested in something. =] <3
Do most people have a favorite actor/actress, band/artist, etc. Fanaticism? =]
Elvis impersonators, etc., those people are extremely fanatical, obsessed! Some are loaded to the tilt w/memorabilia, too. You should see my cute li'l collection of "Kutless" memorabilia. Aww, just look at my avatar. lol. =]
Best to & your career aspiration. Awesome field/profession. <3 =]
added: I don't get the guy's sarcasm before me. What's up w/the pic?
~and what do you mean that you don't think they love you? That's a good thing, since they don't all know you, how could they. Excuse me, but, at this moment, you wouldn't be involved in something extraordinary & admirable to get that adoration. Become a brother/sister in blue, and yea, they love their partners. =] But, I'm sure you're in love w/them, tho. Fanaticism. =] <3
~and w/fanaticism, by definition, the fan will/may have a hard time seeing/comprehending/listening to opposing views. But when it comes to police, it's soo irrelevant when people think they have a legit argument when they bring up police corruption. Every profession can have someone who ends up being fired. It doesn't forever tarnish that profession. {rolls eyes} Many good cops. Just ridiculous argument. I guess they suffer anti-cop fanatacism. Envy blinds, too.
<3 COPS <3 reruns are still runnin' strong on TV, soo, it's a common fanatacism. Without enough viewers, it'd be pulled. =] <3

They do righteous work, and I love them, too. =] <3
