The best time to start reading to them is after the are born. Even though they do not understand what you saying yet, they love the sound of your voice, and the vivid pictures. it helps them devolp a love of reading before they start school. I read to my kids as soon as they were born and now I have a 4 year old who is reading at a second grade level, and a 3 year old who loves to sit for hours on an adult's lap reading stories, and is starting to read on his own.

My baby is 10 months and she will sometimes sit long enough for me to read a book to her. I think I've only read one book all the way through to her. You can start but at that age they would rather you play with them and sing them songs.

Its suggested to start prenatal at 16 weeks when their hearing develops so the sooner the better. Infants have been proven to know their ABC's (flashcards) as early as 3 months because of prenatal teachings.

I started when baby was a bump as well. We read her one book a night, and once she was born, read 2-3 books a day. At 3-4 months we were reading 4-5 books a day. I think it is never too early to start. There are a lot of places where you can get highly discounted children's books (TJ Maxx, Marshalls are some of my favorites, as well as BookCloseouts.com). You can also borrow them from your local library, but when baby starts putting them in his/her mouth, I would definitely stay away from library books as they may have lots of germs on them,

I started when she was still a bump at about 20 weeks pregnant! Read to her every night since then. Of course they don't understand but its the closeness and sound of your voice that's comforting. Start now and enjoy x

I think you can do this at any age, so if you want to, you could start now. It won't do the baby harm for sure, and I actually think it will make the bond between you and your baby even stronger. :)

Don't waste your time. Just put its crib in front of a TV and leave it on. Words are words.
