How to leave our new kitten alone?

We recently lost our kitty after 14 wonderful years. It was heartbreaking.

However, we just adopted a new kitten, an adorable little shelter kitty four months old.

We have had her for three days...and we are probably being too overprotective but she has not been left alone in the house at all since we got her.

How best to leave her on her own for just a few hours? We're already thinking of putting her in our bedroom (she likes our bed) with her dish, litter box and a few toys, and keeping all interesting-to-kitten-but-kitten-doesn't-need-to-get-into-them out of reach (electric leads, etc.).

I know we're probably being too overprotective...but we just got our baby after losing another...

I rescued my shelter kitties when they were four months old. When I had to leave for school, I shut them in my bedroom, with food, water, their litter box, a couple toys, and blankets to sleep on. They did really good like that. They meowed for a little while but then they played on their own and slept. Leaving them in your room with the door closed is a perfect place to keep her. However, make sure there are no windows open (obviously), or furniture she can get stuck under, or heights she can climb up and try to jump off, she could hurt something jumping tall heights. Kittens adventurous and self entertainers. Your kitten will be just fine!

I like your idea of putting her in your bedroom. You want to make sure of course that it is a safe environment but putting her in a small controlled environment would be the safest for her. Make sure that she has food, water, and her litter box. A little blanket would be good for her to sleep on. She will get used to it and be just fine. You could also leave a radio on while you are gone.

Putting her in a room with the necessities and closing the door for a few hours would probably be a great thing for you and the kitty. She needs time to explore on her own.
