Considering adding a 2nd cat. Any tips?
Our current cat (Del) is a small (8 lb.) male, 3-year-old shorthair black-and-white (and 'fixed'). His first two years, he lived with another owner who also had a much older and bigger female cat. Del is a content, playful, 99% indoor cat, but fearful of strangers. We are thinking of getting a second cat to keep him company while we are away during the day.
We plan to adopt from the local APL. Would a female be a better choice?
Ten points to the best answer.

HI Jason,
1st do your research on how to introduce a new kitty to the house hold.
Second make sure you quarantine your new kitty away from the king of the house for 14 days and take new kitty to the vet for a check up. Watch and listen for sneezing, coughing etc. You don't want to have two cats sick. Typically but not always a cat from a shelter may have an upper respiratory infection so make sure you take kitty to the vet.
Don't have expectations on what the new cat will be. Every kitty has it's own personality. Also you might consider fostering a cat from a rescue following the same procedure on introducing your kitty by article below and if it turns out great you can adopt her if not you can return her.
Personality. Be prepared, I fostered a kitten (6-8 month old) because I wanted a buddy for my older cat who loves to play and be chased. Well this semi skittish kitten I thought would be great because it seems she didn't like people so I thought great, she will be a kitty's kitty. Well have months with her and taming her, she turned out to be A LAP KITTY, A PEOPLE KITTY, DARN. She does not like to rough house with my older kitty who is pretty rough. I though, I should of went with a male kitten but not sure if I wanted two males.
So look to a rescue as well, yes you end up paying more but they get a bit more care then at the pound but you are saving a kitty from the pound since I heard they only hold pets for 5 days before they euthanize them.
Buy lint removers, vacuum often and enjoy the kitties.
below is a great article to start with

I had virtually the very similar difficulty, 2 lady cats presented to a male puppy, except that the cats were nevertheless youthful, not extremely adults, and the canines grow to be smaller than the breeds you reported. For the most section, they were given alongside splendidly, playing and wrestling at the same time, and the cats let him recognize at the same time as he grow to be being slightly too difficult. i don't think of they ever incredibly fought.

when you get the new playmate for your cat, make sure that you keep them separated (one in one room, vice versa) for two weeks so that they can get used to the smell and presence of each other. also,i have an older male cat and a younger female cat.
