Help with my trip to Cuba?

I'm looking to go to Cuba for about 10 days. I'll be there at the end of April/beginning of March.

I've never been there before, but I do speak fluent Spanish.

I'm looking for a relaxing time, but I also want to go out and see the real Cuba, outside the resorts. I'd love to spend 3 or 4 days at a resort (ideally separated, so as to not get tired of it) and then leave and go to the cities, and see the actual country, and not just the facade that they put up for tourists.

So, something like, first 2 days at a resort, then a week out and then one last day at a resort.

Should I go to Havana, or are there better places to see?

Should I bother going to many different cities, or should I keep it to 1 or 2 with the 10 days that I have?

Where should I stay? Hotel/Casa particular?

I'm on a tight budget, as I'm a poor university student, so the cheaper the better.

What should I avoid? How do you keep from having your things stolen? Especially your passport, and important documents... I mean, if you go to the beach you can't have them on you, so is there a place that is safe for people to put that kind of thing?

What are the best things to go do and see in the cities?

Any social quirks that I should be aware of?

Thank you!

Update:

I'm NOT coming in from America.

Update 2:

If it helps, I'm going from Canada (with a Canadian Citizenship).

10 days is not enough time to roam Cuba, or even two provinces of it. How are you travelling? Renting a car will cut down on travel time significantly, but since there are no signs directing your travel, it is extremely easy to get lost. Using public transportation (viazul) is cheaper and will get you to your destination, but it takes longer.

It is more expensive to stay in a casa particular than a resort. You are paying very little for accomodation, but you are paying for food/drink/transportation from airport/entertainment/etc. I pay at least double to stay in a casa than I do a resort.

Don't carry personal belongings to the beach. They aren't going to get stolen by Cubans, but they certainly will by other tourists. Keep them locked in the safe in your resort room or in the room of your casa. You'll have the key for the room to your casa.

I would book a ten day package to an all-inclusive resort in Varadero. The resorts downtown are the cheapest, so you'll save on transportation into town and be within walking distance to the markets, restaurants, Josone Park, and where actual Cubans live. It's amazing that people are unaware that Cubans live in Varadero. Anywhere Cubans live is the "real" Cuba. Yes, Varadero is a tourist town, but most tourists don't venture down the side streets, or past Calle 34.

From your resort, I'd rent a casa for a few days in Havana. Leave your luggage in your resort room, let the hotel know you'll be gone and don't want the room serviced (just in case...you always want someone to know where you are), and take only your passport and money and a small bag with clothes and necessities. Once you return to your resort, you can take the single level tourist bus to Matanzas for 10CUC. Spend the day walking around the city. And, come home at the end of the day. No need for accomodations. Matanzas is my favourite city in Cuba (so far.....I still have to experience most of eastern Cuba). Just remember to look down...lots of really high sidewalks and really deep potholes. I've fallen into one once because I was so busy looking around me :s

No social quirks, and not even a need for fluent Spanish.

maximum persons i comprehend who've been there got here upon it desirable, and it valuable won't stay that way for ever. mutually as some human beings only pass to lie on seashores (e.g. Varadero), the actual fee seems to be like getting out and seeing the country, hitch-trekking if mandatory as delivery is slightly unreliable. conversing only slightly Spanish is beneficial. i'm surely tempted...

What country are you coming from? I can tell you right now it'll be tricky going there from the US. No plane, boat, or my thing can go to Cuba from the US due to America being petty.
