My son is 1 month old and I think he's sick but I'm not sure. Should I give him medicine?

My daughter is 16 months and she has a cold. I think that she might have gotten my 1 month old son sick. He's been coughing and his nose is running. It also sounds like he has drainage because he'll be sitting there and kind of snort then cough and it sounds like a wet cough. I have the dosage chart for Acetaminophen. Should I give him some? I really don't want to get my babies out to go to the hospital because it's really cold and I don't want to get them out in the cold when they're sick if I don't have to so I thought I'd get some opinions here first. Thank you!

Of course not. Acetaminophen is not all-purpose medication, and its purpose is not to relieve runny noses or coughs. And a 1 month old is a bit too young to be given any medication without doctor's orders anyway.

You shouldn't give it to your 16 month old either unless she's in pain or running a really high fever.

Don't give a 1 month old baby medication. They are far too young. Plus, acetaminophen won't do a thing for a cold. Keep him upright and don't let him lay flat, put him on the bathroom floor in a bouncy and run the shower for steam for 15 minutes to help loosen his congestion. Use the rubber snot remover they gave you at the hospital. Call your pediatrician if you don't already know these things and ask what they recommend.

No. First of all Tylenol does not treat a cough or runny nose -- it's a pain reliever and anti-fever drug.

Second, you never give medication to a newborn without specific advice from your doctor. Giving something like tylenol would be especially problematic because it WOULD mask symtpoms if he was starting to develop an ear infection or more serious infection.

Call the doctor. (It's Sunday, but he has some sort of answering service.

If he doesn't have a fever do not give him Tylenol. If it's a cold the virus has to run it's course.
