First track meet, help!?!?

Hi, so I'm a freshman and I joined track this year at my school. I'm not very fast though, and I have my first meet this week!!! Most of the other people in my event (distance) were in cross country or another sport before this, but I wasn't so they are all faster than me. It wouldn't be so bad if I wasn't too far behind, but my mile time is 8:30-9 minutes and they all run like 6 or 7 minute miles!!! If they run fast that day, I might be a whole lap behind!!!!! I know I can't magically get really fast in the next 3 days, but does anyone have any tips?? I'm really nervous!! Thanks in advance:)

Oh, and I'll be running one mile in the race.

    eat some protein and carbs the night before.DO NOT be nervous im sure you will do fine. and your a freshman when i did track we had some juniors running 9 min miles.i did 5 events including throwing events and half is body power and physical ability and the other is brain powwer and telling yourseflu CAN do it!!goodluck

    Warm up properly with a 10 minute jog. Perform stretches under your own discretion. Analyze and introspect on your physical anatomy to see what is tight and what needs stretching. Ask your coach for a variety of stretches you can do.

    On a personal note, I like to NOT eat anything 3 or 4 hours prior to the race besides a granola bar. Casual sips of water keep me hydrated but don't overfill my stomach with sloshing fluid that induces side stitches. During the race I like to keep the first lap conservative and cruise the next two laps then push hard the final lap. Make sure to begin at a pace that isn't inanely fast, but stresses you enough so that you know you gave a good effort when the race is finished.

    Well first you need to make sure ur body is flexible. Do some stretches every night on your hamstring, quads, groin, and hip flexer. You can google how to stretch those. Make sure you drink a TON of water throughout the week and also make sure you eat carbs a lot. The most important thing is to make sure you are focused. During the race, take a fast pace as it is a race. You should literally be dying by the end, thats how you know you did your best.

    I have been in races where I got lapped over two times until I got better. Don't worry about it, and just try to enjoy the race, while still giving it your all. If it's your first meet, you don't know how well you'll do and might get a better time than you expect.
