Cons: Should free cell phones aka Obamaphones be renamed Reagenphones?

The program started under former President Reagen in 1985

as The Lifeline Program, not President Obama.

Correct? So these so called Obamaphones should really

be named Ronniephones or Reagenphones, right?

I think so. Another excuse to bash President Obama,

for helping others, proved wrong?

See here:

Cons: Why so worked up over free cell phones for the disabled,

low income and and seniors?

"Lifeline

Lifeline assistance provides discounts on basic monthly service at the primary residence for qualified telephone subscribers. These discounts can be up to $10.00 per month, depending on the location. Along with these programs subscribers living on tribal lands may qualify for additional discounts. Residents of Native American Indian and Alaska Native tribal communities may qualify for enhanced Lifeline assistance (up to an additional $25.00) and expanded Link-Up support (up to an additional $70.00). Eligibility varies from state to state. States with their own programs may have their own eligibility guidelines. For states that rely solely on the federal Lifeline and Link-Up program eligibility criteria, subscribers must either have an income that is at or below 135% of the federal Poverty Guidelines, or participate in other assistance programs. On January 31, 2012, the Federal Communications Commission approved an order changing parts of the Universal Service Fund (USF) known as the "Lifeline Program" to reduce fraud and abuse."

The "Obama Phone" Program has nothing to do with Obama:

The federal "Lifeline" program was created during the Reagan Administration

Update:

Dako: We're talking about 1985 here, before the 9/11 attacks and GWB destroyed

Clinton's surplus economy.

I would like to see a few sources that prove these cell phones are $200 a month

or whatever, I have the same phone, a trackphone and 250 minutes plus the phone

itself only cost me around $60-$70 with tax here in IL, under or about $75 total.

We give free cell phones to our Vets anyway, right? Some of these people could

be Vets that are using these phones btw.

If you're looking for a job, you gotta have a phone. I pay about $70 a month (Canadian) and couldn't be without my cell phone. There are people that will abuse it, but a knee-jerk reaction against everyone is just plain stupid. The same people have no problem with spending taxpayer cash on building bombs that are useless against al-Qaida terrorists.

Maybe these people have a problem with poor people having telecommunications. If you can't call Rush Limbaugh, you don't truly exist. And that's the way some Republicans LIKE it. They'd prefer poor people to go away.

I'd gladly pay an extra $5 a month on my cell bill, if it might help someone find a job.

Yes you are partly correct, but Reagan's Program was for a 'Land Line' and only for Local Calls. Plus, the costs involved were in the $20 to $30 dollar a month range per household.

Obamaphones are Cell/Mobile Phones that cost $200 per week per individual, not a household per month.

Back at you: Yes I know about 1985 since I was around at that time (I graduated High School in 1984 and voted for Reagan in 1984). I work with a guy that brags about his Obamaphone all the time. He goes to school part-time. His phone is a Boost Mobile Blackberry clone. I have seen his load-up cards that he gets and they do come from the AFDC, which is printed on them.

Source(s): I know someone that has his Obamaphone. He gets $200 worth of minutes to be used every week.

What a fool I've been, paying my own phone bill all these years. What was I thinking?! Now that I think about it, I've been a fool for working my butt off since I was 10. That's 47 years of paying taxes. I must be a complete idiot.

Call the phones anything you like. There are a lot of taxes on my phone bill, which I assume pay for phones for the needy. Gosh, I wonder what the needy did before telephones were invented?

Liberal policies are bad NO MATTER where they originate from. And the program to get phones to very rural area predates Reagan anyway. The run away, no holds barred, shameless growth of a government program, that's big Zero's doing. So, your question should be, "Is more of a bad thing good when one of my leftist politicians ramps it up?".

It's not just cons that think this crap.

I pointed this out the other day to someone and they were blown away that this program started decades ago.

Cellphones weren't even around in the 80's.

Right, because cell phones were so popular in 1985. Might as well call it Alexander Graham Bellphone.

Obama owns the name since he has expanded the users of these freebies 3 fold.
