I know quite a bit about the military, but some people really dwarf my knowledge. How does a person become such a military buff, armchair general, or so knowledgeable that they can be hired as an analyst? Is there anything I can do now, any good websites or resources?

Armchair General is a terrific magazine, many entertaining articles that are of good historical quality. Study a particular time period, and branch on from there.
