What tips can somebody give me to travel with a cat in the car ?

I need to go up North by car, traveling approx. 4hrs a day and then stay overnight twice at a Motel. What shall I bring with me in the car for my kitty? (Besides her carrier and a soft towel and her favorite toy.) Who has experienced such a trip? Thanks for any help and suggestions.

    I have the solution!

we live in Kentucky, and our family lives in Virginia, and that's about a 10 hour drive. so when we drive up, of course our 2 kitties come too. we use this medicine from the vet that makes the cat sleepy. all you do is call the vet and explain to them and it should be no problem. at our vet, it's about $6. and it works very well. the cats sleep pretty much the whole trip. the vet should explain everything else, like how much to give her and how often.

Hi, I have also experienced a journey up north with my two cats :)

Prepare for the journey by only letting your cat eat a little before leaving, as it will travel better, and ensure that it goes to the litter box beforehand.

I suggest is covering over the cage with a blanket, possibly a familiar one that smells like you, especially during the first part of the journey. When the cat calms down i would remove the blanket ( which should not be covering the whole cage), so that the cage is ventilated. Having the air conditioner on will also help with this. If possible have a litter tray in the cage, and some newspaper or absorbent bedding next to it, although that may be less comfortable for the cat. Spill proof water and food containers will also come win very useful during the journey. In general just talk to and reassure the cat regularly and it will settle down.

I have traveled with three cats, in automobiles, airplanes, and we have stayed in Hotels---You are smart to just drive four hours a day--and stay in a motel---The best thing to do is to have a sturdy pet carrier with a secure lock, and front grating----I use a small pillow for the bottom of the box, and an older towel for the top---buy some kitty Potty Pads, they are small, and will resist fluids, they also have a friendly scent---if they do not have the kitty pads, get the dog pads, as they are the same---put the pad under the towel---Have a cat bag--with Kitty's kibble, cans of food, cat dishes, can opener, and a few toys--Bring a small jug of cat litter, with a small pan, for a cat box-with small plastic bags, and some paper towels---Have a water bottle, and a water tray that attaches to the cat carrier---I bought one for birds, however they can be attached to the inside of the box, in front, and filled with water---When you get to the motel, put the do not disturb, sign on the door, and make sure the maid does not come in until you and kitty are gone---your cat might try to hide under the bed---try and be patient, and get your cat in his box, before you open the front door---Make sure to have a treat for your cat, like a can of tuna--when in the motel---secure all the windows, so he does not get out---Finally there is an option of giving your cat, a 2.5mg valium, a half hour before the trip--I always put kitty in the front seat, facing me--so as to comfort the cat--Good Luck with your Journey--I have traveled from San Diego to Seattle---

I had to drive from Oklahoma to California with my cat in the car. She HATED it the entire way there. Most cats hate riding in cars. Just try to make them as comfortable as possible. Make sure to bring cat food, of course, and two bowls for food and water for them. Put a towel down in the carrier. I usually let my cat out of the carrier in the hotels to let them stretch. If you let them out in the car while your driving (if your cat is like mine) it could try jumping up on the dashboard and distract you from driving. Or whenever you make a stop, you could let your cat out in the car to walk around in the car. Just don’t open the doors, it could run out and get lost! Don’t leave your windows rolled down low enough for them to jump out.

Maybe a lead if you plan to have a toilet break, and a cloth to cover the bed so kitty is less stressed
