Neutering males is done predominantly so that they don't impregnate female cats, because sadly there will always be more cats than there are good homes available for them.

Neutering makes them more acceptable as house pets too. A tom cat will spray to scent mark his territory and advertise himself to female cats. The smell is awful and not easy to completely remove. Once cats start spraying it becomes an ingrained behaviour which means it can be a difficult habit to stop. Sexually active cats will wander further afield in search of females and this can lead to them getting injured on the roads or more involved in fights as they stray into other males' territories. Cat fights can cause serious injuries or they can catch infectious diseases through cat bites.

Neutering is a very quick and minor procedure. It's one of the few things we can do which is almost guaranteed to increase the lifespan of our pets and don't we all want our pets to live as long as possible?

No - males, once mature, are always out to breed females. They just are looking for opportunity - not being in heat like a female.

    You neuter them to:

    1. Prevent spraying all over the house (on carpet, walls, etc.) Tom cat urine is next to impossible to get out of fabric or wood flooring.

    2. Prevent early cancers (testicular).

    3. Stop the thousands of kittens produced just to end up in shelters to die due to lack of homes.

ONE male can get many females pregnant - if each female only has 4 kittens, it adds up quickly. Females can get pregnant up to 3 times a year if bred on every heat cycle!

They are neutered so they won't get other female cats pregnant. Same as a guy if they got a vasectomy.

They don't go into heat, but they spray their scent on everything to kind of "mark their territory" and it smells awful and stains everything. That's why they are neutered.
