Films with underestimated people?

So any reccomendations for films where the lead (or one of the leads) is somehow 'not normal' - it can be anything from uglyness/scars/slightly autistic - and somehow disproves others opinion of them . (i realise im not explaining this very well...) eg, i watched 'thats what i am' the other day and kind of like that, how an 'ugly' ginger kid is actually a really good strong person, and the other normal more popular boy begins to see that.

another sort of example is hugh dancy's 'adam'.

or even 'beastly'

doesnt have to be romance, can just be strong friendship.

if you can get a handle on what im asking for , some films would be really great, thankyou!!

Update:

* someone else manages to see past whatever is wrong with the person.

Update 2:

sorry for being fussy with the answers - i do think the shawshank redemption is a brilliant film but despite wanting something 'serious' maybe something not that 'heavy'. thanks very much though for answering my question.

p.s. i will read EVERY answer given. (dont worry this will be the last edit)

All the Zatoichi movies. They're about a blind master swordsman whose reputation sometimes precedes him but most often people are unaware of who he is, they just think he's a blind travelling masseur of low social status. The recent remake with Takeshi Kitano was good but imo the originals with Shintarô Katsu are far far far better, especially the earlier of his 26 Zatoichi films. Kitano plays him dry and serious, Katsu's Zatoichi is a bubbling and joyful man, honourable and humble, he only gets deadly serious when he needs to. Apparently they're all on Hulu.

Mask. The ending is sad and not what you would expect but it's a great story. It stars Cher (who's very good in it) as a mother to a disfigured teenage boy and the struggles he faces in order to fit in in a High School. It's a great movie.

Temple Grandin--true story of a woman with autism who reformed the cattle industry

Mask--very depressing ending though. true story of a boy who's deformed. he has to repeatedly show he very smart, responsible and a nice guy

The Miracle Worker--about Helen Keller (blind and deaf). the story of Anne Sullivan becoming Helen Keller's teacher. her parents treated her as if she was almost like an animal, completely incapable of communication or education. sullivan reaches her and shows them differently. uplifting

The Elephant Man--again, pretty depressing. true story of a man who was deformed, abused and treated like a side show freak. he was befriended by a doctor who helps him.

The Boy Who Could Fly--kids movie but very good. a kid moves next door to a boy who can't talk. no one knows it but he can fly. the girl makes friends with him.

I've never seen it, but Perks Of Being A Wallflower is kinda like that from what I've saw from trailers and stuff.
