Rock and Pop- If you were/are a musician, what is/do you think your purpose would be behind it?

The reason why I like playing songs and writing music is because it's a form of expression, and I like trying to think of something new to bring to the table while having fun or using music as a serious outlet. What about you guys? Players, why do you play/write music? Listeners, what do you think would be your reason to create music? (i.e. to make money, get the girls/show off, something to cure boredom, a way to let off steam or express other emotions, etc)

BQ- how's everyone? It's been a while since I've stopped by here lol

BQ2- The last thing that you were really happy about? :)

Thanks everyone! Have a nice weekend!

Update:

@Tyler- I'm doin alright, could be better, could be worse, but thanks for asking :)

If I ever did, it would probably be to vent about how much I hate life or to just blow off some steam.

Honestly though right now I want to learn just enough piano to play some Beatles songs and Imagine and Linus and Lucy. And the Pink Panther Theme I guess, but I can do that on my sax.

BQ: Meh:/ everything's completely crazy for me right now between dealing with getting a summer class, my fall classes, my friend who's moving to Oregon next week, and...some other crap. Hope you're doing better than I am.

BQ2: Playing Humans vs. Zombies at my college a few weeks ago. I have some really nerdy new friends now who are actually pretty fun to hang out with. And finding out that I might actually get to see Switchfoot with my guy best friend in a few weeks.

Yeah it has been a while since you've been here. I play gittar and sing, and I do it for many different reasons.

I learned how to play so I could get laid, but then I liked the sound it made so I even did it (much like sex) when I was completely alone. It's a great way to blow off steam and relieve stress, too.

When I write music and lyrics, I'm just trying to create something meaningful (even frivolous meanings are still meanings) and not too blatantly ripped off, so I guess it's an art form or at least an attempt at one. I hate listening to anything I wrote though.

When I jam with my band (we're mostly retired as a band) or with friends, I do it just because it's fun and intense. A good jam to a musician is like a good meal to a gourmet or a hard-won victory to a jock, because it's really satisfying.

But when I play live, it's right back to getting laid. Even though I'm married and don't do that, even though I'm too old and ugly to do it if I was single, I still play like that. I throw moves and get into the playing just like I did in my late teens and twenties, because getting laid has little to do with music but everything to do with rock and roll.

BQ: My finger hurts. I injured it at work.

BQ2: It's healing nicely and I'm expected to make a full recovery. That's pretty happy, even though it still hurts.

If I was a musician/singer on the big stage, my purpose would be to bring Rock Music Back into the light. I'd play a lot of blues-rock songs and just do what I love doing. But, something seriously needs to be done, because Rock is virtually non-existent anymore.

BQ1: I am OK. How You Doin'?

BQ2: There was once a person that I enjoyed being around so much. The last time I saw her was about a year ago, but it isn't like it sounds. That was the last time I was really happy.

It started as more of a right of passage. Everyone I knew that was into similar music also played.

These days its primarily therapeutic. Sitting and practicing is a discipline I'll never have, too much other stuff to do, so I'll always be a perfectly mediocre guitar player. Definitely not a writer either, can take someone elses piece and rework it, but writing from scratch has never been my thing.

BQ I don't blame you, I keep thinking I'll watch a movie before bed or something instead of turning on the computer, but alas... I keep coming back.

BQ2 Hit up the Decibel Tour last Sunday. Cannibal Corpse, Napalm Death, and Immolation did a pretty stellar job at making me happy.

  • I write music because its:

    1. Fun

    2. A great way to release all my agression instead of using my fists

    3. An easier way to get my feelings across

    4. Great way to express my emotions.

I'm lost without my guitar lol

Bq: I'm feeling lethargic. The rain always makes me drowsy.

Bq2: seeing this girl I really love and hanging out with her for a bit. I miss her so much she makes me so happy. And my friend finally is inviting me over to his house. Its about time. I asked months ago if we could jam. He said yeah, at my house. All he did was flake on me and lie and couple days ago, now he's all like come over to my house bring your guitar well jam and party and stuff. Its about time. Like 5 freakin months later. Lol he's a good guy though, a bit of a mystery but he's alright.

    Have a wonderful weekend!

As a creative outlet that can be shared. Writing a pop song with a "Hook" just means you want to make $. People are freaked-out about copyrights, record deals, and paying gigs. People forget when creating/playing music was fun, sitting on the deck, garage, or backyard bbq, just playing with friends over a couple beers, enjoying what you do. having a good time.

The reason I play/write is for aggression and experimentation. Mostly to push the boundaries of what music can be. I can't use serious topics, it has to be something along the lines of random stuff. If I make money off the music I'm currently doing, good. If not it's always something I'm going to be doing for a long time.

Even if I was doing it for a living, I'd like to think i'd stay true to myself, and do it for the love of the creative process and expressing emotions through beautiful sounds.

I decided to learn guitar a few year ago as I got alot more into music. I play because It's a hobby of mine and I love the idea of being able to express feelings through sound, because i'm not too good with words.

BQ - I'm fine thanks for asking :)

    BQ2 - Getting a new guitar coincidentally :)
