Seven, provided George R.R. Martin lives long enough. Two remaining for release, five already released. Next book, The Winds of Winter, does not have a planned release date.

There have been five books:
Game of Thrones.
A clash of Kings
A storm of swords. Split into two parts.
A feast for crows
A dance with dragons. Split into two parts.
The final two, The winds of winter and a Dream of spring, have not yet been released. The Winds of winter will be released , I am guessing, in 2016. A dream of spring in 2022, maybe.
I would highly recommend this series to anyone who loves to read. The TV show is great too. But I prefer the books.
