Writers and readers, what do you hate or dislike in a story?

I dislike:

Random romance which is not necessary for the plot but is put in

Info dump beginnings

Too much telling description

Story that goes too slowly

Unrealistic, mary sue, or "cookie cutter" (very similar in all aspects) characters

Unrealistic or confusing plot and storyline

Purple prosing and exaggerating

Update:

K, I also hate predictability.

It also puts me off when the writer just puts every word that needs a terminology list to understand right at the beginning of the story.

I read alot and like you said, the absolute worst thing (in my opinion) is when they dump a tonne of information on you. I've read stories where characters could be mid conversation and someone else could walk in the room and the writer thinks it's necessary to give every background detail on this person. It's not needed- people actually like mysteriousness and having to guess.

I also had predictable stories. Or ones that describe the setting so much you could draw it perfectly without having to see a picture. Too much dialogue can be annoying too. Especially when they do things like,

    "You did what?!"

    "I sold the car,"

    "Why did you do that?!"

Like they should add stuff onto the ends of the dialogue to create a picture of how the person says it etc.

    Like:

A story that gets you interested so that you can't put down. Like Doctor Who, or Agatha Christi, or Jane Austen, or some other random person.

    Dislikes:

A story that has absolutely no plot, random characters, and doesn't have anything about it to recommend itself eg comedy, disaster, suspense, something cool.

    What I write:

Whatever I am in the mood for. Sometimes I write nineteenth century, sometimes futuristic, sometimes modern, sometimes ancient, sometimes I write randomly. It depends. But I love a good book cause they are usually better than the ones I write.

I dislike overemphasised and unnecessary romantic elements, especially if it comes with a love triangle or 'insta love' attached - that is, love at first sight, love from having.dreamt it before, love because they were secretly soul mates/reincarnated lovers. Basically, romance without a proper buildup that intrudes on the story and follows too many popular cliches of the day. I don't mind love triangles as much, but I hate it when they're written in for the sake of it, because people think that they sell or will sell well. Also, abusive and stalkery bad boy' love interests who should really just be in jail.

For technical writing aspects, I despise purple prose but at the other end of the range I hate beige prose as well. I also dislike it when an author tries to sound smart or philosophical, by abusing the thesaurus or making grand statements. I also hate it when authors cannot grasp the meaning of showing vs telling and infodump/throw exposition at us as though we should like the story more because of it.

Lazy, predictable plotting, and deus ex machinas. If you don't care about solving your plot why should I?

I also hate Mary Sues and bitchy characters that everyone adores for no reason (e.g., Bella, Edward, Alice, Bree, Clary, Jace, Will, Tessa, Nora, Patch, Abby, Travis, Ana, Christian, Zoe, Riley, Lissa, Rose, Adrian, Railrunner, and the list goes on). Especially when the narrative constantly refers to them as kind or good or caring or other qualities that we can clearly see that they are not. Also, bland characters without personality who serve solely as back up to the main character to assure him or her that they are awesome.

Also- women slut shaming or hating on other women, for talking to their boyfriend or wearing short skirts or just being blonde and or a cheerleader. It's just stupid and offensive.
