How to properly care for a dog while at work?
I usually work from 8-5 (sometimes shorter hours), but we were looking in getting two dogs. I've seen lots of differing opinions on this, so here's what we were looking for:
1. I feel like 8-5 is a long while (hence why we want two, so they don't get too lonely) for a dog to be inside, but I've seen arguments that leaving dogs outside for that long is bad too. We probably wouldn't have anyone able to come and let the dogs out during the day, but we do have a LARGE shed in the back that we don't use that we were going to use as a dog house, because yes, they would be outside dogs while we were at work.
2. Is there a way to train dogs NOT to jump fences? We have a 3.5 foot fence, and we were looking at medium sized dogs (we may be building a larger fence in the future, but as of now we do not have a large fence). If there are ways, do you know of (or can provide one) any tutorials on properly fence training dogs?
3. We are teachers, so we have summers off to be able to spend with the dogs and train them. This is why we are looking at getting two dogs in the next couple of weeks, as that allows us to properly train them, get them used to the house, and properly supervise them inside and outside the house.
questions:
1) why two females? We were thinking of a male and female (both spayed/neutered, not looking to breed)
2) our HOA only allows vinyl or wood, just going to throw that out there :)

1. Getting 2 dogs at the same time is a bad idea. They bond to each other, not to you, and are 10 times as hard to train than just one dog. Plus, you'll have 2 dogs that get lonely instead of one. More info: http://leerburg.com/2dogs.htm
Leaving dogs outside is a TERRIBLE idea. They will bark their fool heads off, with no one there to tell them to stop. Expect to come home to a summons from Animal Control. Or perhaps even poisoned dogs... Plus kids can tease them and make them vicious. Plus they will destroy the yard and/or escape.
2. NO. Even a small dog can easily jump a 3.5 foot fence. I have a small dog who has gone over a 6 foot fence....

1. Get one dog, get it trained properly and then get a second if you can manage it. Give it 6 months if you're adopting adults, a year if you're getting a puppy.
2. Do not plan to leave your dog outside all day while you are at work. Too many things can go wrong and very few dogs have the proper coat and temperament to be left outside like that. Crate the dog while you are at work until you can trust it in a small part of the house.
3. Please, just get ONE dog for now. They will not keep eachother company- this is not disney. They don't have tea parties while you are gone. You need to get just one for now.

There's really no way to "fence-train" a dog, especially when you won't be there most of the time to reinforce the training. You could invest in a higher fence if you are worried they might escape or you could get an electric fence that would also keep them contained.

My opinion is that leaving your dog in a house or fence should be viewed the same as you being forced to stay at your house that long. Like people dogs need social time everyday. Two dogs would be a good idea but make sure they like each other and enjoy being together. I would advise getting two females
