Why aren't GMO food products labeled yet ?

Several U.S. farmers reported sterility or fertility problems among pigs and cows fed on GM corn varieties

Investigators in India have documented fertility problems, abortions, premature births, and other serious health issues, including deaths, among buffaloes fed GM cottonseed products

Studies link genetically modified organisms (GMOs) with toxins, allergies, infertility, infant mortality, immune dysfunction, stunted growth, accelerated aging, and death. Whistleblowers were fired, threatened, and gagged. Warnings by FDA scientists were ignored.

Expert Jeffrey M. Smith, author of Seeds of Deception, presents the evidence that these gene-spliced crops may lead to health and environmental catastrophes.

Biotech firms claim they offer a genetically modified pest-resistant crop. Pest-resistant in this context actually means the crops contain their own built-in pesticide. So eating a GM plant, whether you’re a bug or a human, means you’re ingesting toxic pesticides.

The main reason why GMO food products are not yet labeled is that Monsanto, E.I Dupont De Nemours & Co., PepsiCo Inc., the Grocery Manufacturers Association, Kraft Foods, Bayer Crop Science, Dow AgroSciences, BASF Plant Science and Syngenta Corporation all spend millions of dollars to flood the market with misinformation and send lobbiests to Washington DC to turn our congressmen and senators against us. In November, 2012, California voters narrowly defeated Proposition 37 which would have require mandatory GMO labeling. Why? Because the Yes on 37 campaign was outspent by the No on 37 campaign by roughly $36,000,000. The No on 37 campaign spent A staggering $46,000,000to fight Proposition 37 while the YES on 37 campaign was only able to spend $9,200,000. Monsanto proudly donated $8,112,867 to lead the charge. With that great a discrepancy in spending, you might have expected that it went down in a landslide. The truth is that it was narrowly defeated by a margin of 48.59% YES, 51.41% NO. The fact is that most Californians did see through the lies and unsubstantiated claims made by the NO on 37 campaign. Funny thing, Monsanto is not headquartered in California.

There are some states, including Maine, which have passed laws requiring mandatory GMO labeling and more states are lining up. The ways to get the passed nationwide is to A) Pressure your senators and congressmen to say NO to special interests and YES to their actual voting interests. Another step that you can take is to sign up at Buycott.com (http://www.buycott.com)/ which allows you to select several campaigns that you might believe in (including SAY NO TO GMO, NO ANIMAL TESTING…) and then you can enter a company name and the site will tell you if that company is one that you are boycotting, supporting, is neutral or if there is not enough information on it. You can also download it to your smart phone and scan the barcodes of items in your kitchen or in the grocery store to see if you want to support them or not.

The bottom line is that Monsanto has only one true priority – make money for their shareholders. If they go along with voluntary GMO labeling, they realize that they are giving people the choice of buying GMO or not and they are afraid (and rightly so) that sales will plummet and people will avoid GMO products as more and more studies are coming out and showing the harm of GMO seeds.

Monsanto claims that their seeds are safe – even long term. The problem with this claim is that their GMO seeds have only been in use for 15 years and it is impossible to have long-term results in that time. There is a HUGE difference between GMO seed and Hybrid Seed. An example of Hybrid is when you combine an apricot and a plum. The delicious fruit is now called a Plout (Plu ott) and is sold in the summer. They are both fruit. Hybrid seeds have been in use for many years. A GMO seed is a cross species hybrid (Plant and Animal) and is designed to be herbicide resistant. This, theoretically, means that they can spray the hell out of the crops to kill the weeds and the crop will be “safe” to eat. Unfortunately, herbicide resistant weeds are now growing in the GMO crops and the seeds do not appear to be as safe as Monsanto says that they are.

In a recent study, GMO feed was fed to some pigs over a 5 month period. They chose pigs because pigs and humans have very similar digestive systems. The study, conducted by Australian and U.S. researchers followed 168 pigs from weaning age to slaughter weight over the course of nearly 23 weeks. Half of those pigs (84) ate a diet based on GM corn and soy, while the other half ate as close as possible to the same diet based on conventionally grown, non-GM corn and soy. The researchers found few statistically significant differences between the two groups after comparing them based on nearly 20 different parameters, including weight gain, stomach ulcers and kidney abnormalities. The GM-fed pigs did, however, show significantly higher rates of “severe” stomach inflammation, as well as an average of 25 percent heavier uteri in relation to body weight.

Even in small doses, GMO Products may well present a health risk and we should all have the opportunity to make our own decisions as to whether we want to consume it or not. Monsanto should not be allowed to hide this from us.

There is scientific study and knowledge to prove that GMO food is not fit to eat as there is no way to know at this point how it shall affect your body or any animals body that eats it. Why do you think there are literallyh millions of Bees dead all to GMO plants that generate no food and are nothing but poison. If all the bees die due to the slop Monsanto produces and tampers with then so goes all life on Earth as there will be no way to pollinate plants to generate more food. Some of you here I read call it fear mongering, that is a idots words for the simple reason Monsanto is poisoning earth and most people know that. I would suggest people grow their own gardens and plants from Live seed, not that slop Monsanto puts out which is dead seed, it produces once and that is it.

So do not tell me that this is fear mongering, it most certainly is not as there is enough scientific information out there to prove differenly, do you research before open up they mouth and removing all doubt your a fool.

Well there already is the Organic label which excludes GMO's. Labeling efforts are fear mongering plain and simple. If you are truly concerned where your food comes get to know the people who produce it and buy locally. If it comes in a box it does not belong in your body regardless of what the label says.

  • When you breathe, you're exposing your self to thousands of toxins. Every day, your body is being bombarded with more cancer-enducing rays than you could count in a lifetime. When you drink water, no matter the source, you're ingesting countless toxins. Why, then, are we not all dead? Because the concentration of these things that we're exposed to is very, very, VERY low.

Now, what does this have to do with GMO products? The harmful things people claim that these foods can do usually have no effect whatsoever on humans. For example, many crops are modified to be pest resistant, having a microscopic coating on their leaves and stems that bursts the cells of insect when ingested, but, as terrifying as that sounds, it cannot do the same with the cells of humans due to the minute concentration and the incredible difference in rigidity of cells in insects and humans. Put simply, it has no effect whatsoever on a human when ingested.

Another aspect of GMO's to consider is that of supply. Without GMO's, mortality rates would sky-rocket, our nation would go into crisis, business would halt, transportation would halt, infrastructure would collapse, and, ultimately, every nation would exist in poverty and starvation. Food is something we ALL need, and without GMOs, our supply would drop drastically. The fact is, most GMO's were created not just to increase profit, but to keep up with the food demand of an ever-growing world. Without GMO's, we would have started dying off in masses a long time ago.

Finally, GMO's have been around for ages. Man has been crossbreading crops and modifying their genetic make-up for thousands of years. Did you know that corn used to be grape-sized? Thanks to GMO's, it isn't anymore. And, if you know enough about history, you'd know that corn was intergral to the survival of many, even having entire cultures revolving around it. The fact is that the test of time isn't on your side in this argument.
