Rehearsal for the wedding?

I heard, that weddings are accepted to rehearse in the USA. Please, explain me purpose and causes of the event, if it's true.

Update:

As i understood, most people in the USA are not aware of the traditions of this sacrament as a wedding, that just to repeat the others. Thank you, Ashley D. for comprehensive answer.

Rehearsals are so people in the wedding party know the order of events and where to stand and stuff.

Sometimes it is helpful. Like this past weekend my friend got married in a church as part of a religion that I do not belong to. It was a VERY traditional wedding, and included lots of stuff that myself and the rest of the bridal party were not used to. There was lots of sitting and standing and then we had to go up to stand by the alter as the couple said their vows then there was the whole wedding mass with sitting and standing and kneeling and the Eucharist and all that stuff. Without a rehearsal I can promise you that most of the wedding party would have been very confused about what to do when.

But then there are other weddings I've been to where the only thing the bridal party had to do was walk when the music started, then stand, then walk back, so they didn't really need a rehearsal and didn't have one.

It seems sort of optional depending on where your wedding is. From what I understand lots of churches require them, but if you get married outside of a church, it's largely up to you.
