Is this Antibiotic Dose too much?

Three days ago the Doctor prescribed Penicillin (LPV 500) for an abscess on my tooth. The Dose is two tablets a day until the course is finished. However there are 50 tablets in the box, that means 25 Days. I understand that one must take the full course for it to be completely effective, but 25 Days seems a little excessive. Should I still take them all or could I reduce the dose to something a little less?

Oh goodness. Don't reduce the duration or amount of an antibiotic, ever, without consulting a doctor. The doctor that prescribed it should be able to help you with something like this over the phone, via the receptionist even.

Stopping antibiotics early or adjusting the dose, can cause the infection to become resistant to the drug. This creates a stronger infection, that's much harder to treat. Call your GP. He can help.

I wouldn't give my child a double dose,I think the whole point of having the antibiotics is that they are spaced out in even doses for them to work, if the doctor has said 1 dose 3 times a day then that's what I would stick to. Hope he gets well soon x

It can take that long to totally get rid of an infection in your mouth. You really should take all of it as prescribed. Bacteria in your mouth can damage your heart valves if it gets into your bloodstream from an abcess. A mouth abcess is very serious. Don't cut back or take it for less time.

You could either call the pharmacy and ask if that is correct or call the doctors office and ask them.
