It's the 19th amendment to the Constitution and was brought about by the Suffrage Movement. Some notable members were Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and Harriet Tubman. I have always found it interesting that while white men always had the vote, black men were allowed to vote before any race of women. Black and white women got the vote at the same time, so it was less a matter of the color of your skin than your gender.
