Does everybody understand just what a "government shutdown" really means?

I didn't realize that only about a quarter of the government functions will shut down - passport office, air traffic controllers, parks, etc. - things Congress votes on paying for. Social Security payments, medicare, medicaid, military pay, veterans benefits, food stamps, etc. - these things will not be affected.

Update:

No, I'm not in favor of a goverment shutdown. Duh. But the media always hypes this every time it comes up, and gets everybody panicked including me. I'm on Social Security, so I was worried. I was relieved to learn what this really means, just thought I'd pass it along in case there's anybody else out there as confused as I was. And I do agree that Congress shouldn't get paid if they can't keep the train on the tracks, that's their job. I don't agree this is the Republicans' fault, though, since they're trying to get the Democrats to agree to spending cuts. We're losing our borrowing power, people, it's time to say no more.

Hey, cut it out. You are interfering with the standard Democrat line about how the world will come to an end.

Yes. And if the government would default, that would be entirely the fault of the president who would then go directly to jail. The government has been shutdown at least 12 times since 1977, maybe more. When Clinton was president, it was shut down for 18 days.

Republicans don't care, a shutdowned government during Obama's term just means we can blame it all on him. It's a political gamble that could backfire horribly.

What a government shutdown really means is that Republicans in the House would rather stab at the heart of America--the people--than to do the work they were sent to Congress to do. It is a spit in the face of their constituents to obstruct, block and stop, rather than to do their part to run the country--the ONE job they were elected to do.

Pay for Congressmen should shut down, as they are failing at doing their job anyway.

Bigger deal would be that it would like cause our international credit rating to go down again, causing interest rates to skyrocket for every American.

The Republicans fabricated it by themselves and they can fix it.
