cat keeps trying to use the litter box?

My 4 year old cat has been trying (apparently unsuccessfully) to use her litter box for approximately the last 20 minutes. I have tried to see what she's trying to do during this ordeal and she looks like she's trying to defecate and can't quite do it. At first I thought she was just having a hard time because her box was dirty but I shooed her out and cleaned it and found nothing fresh so she hasn't done anything yet. She goes in and scratches, comes out and plays with our other cat for a couple minutes and dashes back into the box. I'm not sure what to do! We did recently force her out of a life of freedom as an outdoor cat to a confined inside cat, so maybe a change in diet could be to blame? I'm really not sure, she's never experienced anything like this before. Any help would be greatly appreciated, I'm worried about my girl! <3

You need to see a vet. Only a vet can determine if she has a possible urinary tract infection which would need antibiotics or if she is constipated and will give you something to make her go.

You definitely don't want a blockage up there for days and days.. I'd seek medical care as soon as possible if she doesn't go soon.

The cat probably has a bladder infection which is too painful when it tries to void. Call the vet for medicine. After a dose or two the problem eases and the cat will be OK. Some cats get this after eating fish.

Contact your vet. If it's a Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) it needs antibiotics. Maybe the vet will recommend something to make it poo. Whatever, call the vet and ask.

If she's trying to defecate and is unable to do so, she could be impacted. If she's having trouble peeing, she could have a UTI. A vet will be able to treat either one.
