Please someone tell me something positive about becoming a nursing home administrator!?
Please someone tell me something positive about becoming a nursing home administrator! The more research I do online, the more discouraged I become. Regulations, staff that really suck, threats of lawsuits, unhappy residents, anxiety about not being able to keep the census up, most administrators only lasting 12-24 months at any one facility, ect. If it is so horrible, why does anyone WANT to do it? Just for the money?

As someone who has worked in a nursing home and also have health care regulatory experience, the best nursing homes are the ones that have Administrators who are really genuine and care about residents and their staff. I think being in an Administrator in a nursing home that is free standing or not for profit brings less pressures of "profit". National chains that have a corporation in another state I think are very stressful work environments when the national chain has their thumb on their other facilities. Of course these are only generalities, but the nursing home I worked at was for profit corporate owned in a different state, and we had daily "PPS" meetings on the census, how many were being skilled, and the marketing/admissions folks had a really hard time of it as well.
Regulations are only minimum standards, so to me the regulatory side should be something the nursing home is already doing. Regulations are common sense: Take care of residents, assess significant changes, cook food properly, wash your hands before and after performing personal care from resident to resident..........do appropriate wound treatments and give medications as ordered. Regulations are founded on "basic" care and services.
I have met some wonderful Administrators who truly care about what they do. Those are the best nursing homes.
Staff turn over rate is more related to how management and supervisors treat direct care staff. At the nursing home I worked, the way direct care staff were talked to at times was shameful. Nursing homes that treat their direct care staff like valuable members of a team.....are the ones who are better. They retain staff, thus have consistent staffing for residents.
A good sign of whether or not there is a culture of Administrator turn over is to check Nursing Home Administrator turn over. Nursing homes with turn over of Nursing Home Administrators don't fare well either.
Not everyone is cut out to be a Nursing Home Administrator....it is truly a gift.

..Sorry. You already know everything you need to know. You are on the hook for every little error and get little credit for getting it right, even if you do so for 15 years. 1 problem and that makes the papers. The pay and hours suck. The staff wages do not allow for excellence or longevity. It's about the last job on earth I would consider in this messed up society and I have been a human service pro for 30 years.

There are a lot of horrible jobs that nevertheless get filled. Having a job means you get an income! And for nursing homes specifically, despite all the crap, you do have the opportunity to feel good about helping people.

The biggest positive thing about it is that it is a regular job that pays money.
