Who gets first pick of the litter?

My dog may sire a litter of pups and I have the option of "pick of the litter".

What does that mean? Do I get first pick, or second? I want a female dog (yes I am going to spay her as I know nothing about raising puppies) but I want clarification from people who have come into this situation.

Update:

First pick of the litter.. thanks.

Pick of the litter is the best of the litter, male or female, If you want a female, then take pick female of the litter. Therefor YOU pick first. (all supposing you know what you are doing and know how to pick a puppy that is the best--inexperienced pet owners usually don't know which is best or worst) If you don't know much about raising puppies then how do you know which puppy is the best unless the breeder tells you. And if they want the best female, then you can figure out what that means!

That kind of thing is supposed to be put in writing .Word of mouth means squat these days, Get EVERYTHING in writing, leave nothing to chance.

I hope you know what you are doing regarding the mom of the proposed pups, many things can go wrong pups can die inside the mom or mummify.

Pick of the litter will be the one that you would like as yours to keep. I do know she will be spayed because she will be living with her dad won't she.

All the best before the proposed activity takes place and I hope both dogs used for mating are great samples of their breed.

If you are a reputable breeder you WILL know what "pick of the litter is". Since you don't, neuter your dog - you have NO business letting him breed. I'm sure he doesn't have genetic health testing nor a championship.

But to answer the question - pick of the litter means just that - you get your pick. Some breeders will take first pick, some don't. Up to you and the owner to decide that and put it in writing.

Sire's normally get paid a fee and do not get any pick. The owner of the female keeps all. If this unusual agreement was made then it should be in writing including whether it is first pick or not. No contract, you get nothing.

Depends on what the contract says.

If it states stud fees that is all you get.

If it says pick of litter, you get first pick.

If it says Bitches owner gets pick then they get to pick the puppy for you.

It all depends on what agreement you and the Bitches owner have come to.

If you know nothing about raising a puppy take money payment.

Pick of the litter entitles who ever is getting the "Pick" to pick out a puppy before anyone else

"1st pick of litter" means that you get to choose which pup you want before anyone else gets to choose.

sometimes the stud owner gets "second pick".. which means that the female's owner/co owner, or the breeder of the female had already reserved first pick.. which means you get to choose a pup AFTER they have made their selection.

depends on what the stud contact says.

That is what you work out with the owner of the bit** and have written into your contract. When I have entered into a stud contract with a puppy back as payment, I specified that as the bit** owner I wanted first right of refusal on any puppy and that the sire owner could have first choice after that. I'm not breeding for their kennel- I'm breeding for mine.

ADD: I hope it's not this dog. Only backyard breeders whelp mutts for no purpose and contributing to that by providing the stud is just as bad. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AnWB2...

Pick of the litter means your choice.

If your dog is a PROVEN producer of QUALITY animals, there should be NO pick of the litter, all puppies should be equally good or equally garbage.
