My Son's cough won't go away?
2 weeks ago my 2 and a half year old Son caught a cold and got a bad cough with it. It was so bad that the doctor put him on a course of antibiotics, but it didn't get any better. I spoke to the doctor again who said some coughs just linger after a cold and he'll be fine within a few days, however it's been 2 weeks now and getting worse. 2 nights ago he woke up with a coughing fit that got so bad he retched and was sick twice. During the day he does cough but not half as bad as at night. He still eats and dtinks, plays etc and his temperature is normal so why is he still so ill? Oh and I've also noticed it's worse after a bath or when he has been running around. Thanks in advance.

After my daughter caught a virus, I was told her cough could linger for 3 more weeks. There's also the possibility that he's caught something else while getting over the old sickness.
It really just needs to go its course. But you can always help treat the symptoms. A vaporizer helps, or even just steaming up the bathroom to breath in the moist air. Chicken broth in a mug, peppermint tea steeped with fresh lemon and honey, or just having something to suck on to coat the throat is good. With a 2 1/2 year old, you don't want him to choke obviously, so I recommend making your own cough drops with lollipop moulds so he can hold on to the stick. It's actually pretty easy.

Could be "cough variant asthma" see a doc tomorrow! When my son (2) caught a couple really bad colds (RSV and the flu together) he got a cough that lingered. For weeks it got worse not better and always at night or while playing. I took him to the doc, she gave him an inhaler to help the symptoms. That same night he had a full blown asthma attack. (The coughing fits are a light asthma attack) the inhaler stopped the cough right away! I was so glad I had it!!
My son hasn't needed an inhaler since last Christmas, when he stopped catching colds. Cough variant asthma causes asthma symptoms most often after a respiratory illness, or allergies can trigger it. Then it goes away when what triggered it goes away.
