Read the poem by Emily Dickinson "If I can keep one heart from breaking..." Atheists and Theists alike should abide by the words in that poem.I read it first when I was about 8 and it has influenced my life for the past 57 years.

Not to nullify anything of what I'm about to say, I'm only 16 and I am currently in the process of finding myself and my meaning in life. Although I do think I have achieved a lot in this aspect.

Now to begin, I am in fact an atheist. I'm also an INTJ which means I'm easily receptive to atheism and all its philosophies (ex. Humanism, universalism, realism, etc.). I do not believe in a deity, but I do have an open mind to afterlife possibilities, or in other words -- a "spirit world" where our souls reside.

Back on topic...Meaning for us as humans in life cannot be really determined unless on a particular basis. Each person has his or her own meaning in life. Whether to do good (in their minds of course), help others, and or 'live on the edge' (just an arbitrary example). You could say that I side with a more nihilistic view of not having a purpose or meaning in life, being that I believe that speculation on existence of anything without proof is illogical and irrational, but then again (for the condescending people out there), I might be a bit callow as a 16 year old.

I hope that answered your question on a deep enough level. Good day!

You ask this of atheists? With the implication that theists somehow have an answer, or a more credible answer?

I think none of us knows, but only some of us realize that we don't know.

Nietzsche said that? I thought he was completely full of shiit. I'll have to revise my opinion now.

The meaning of life is to obtain happiness. Most occurrences in the universe are random. However, evolution is not (only the most fit survive). Therefore, all humans evolved to want to be happy (to keep us alive and reproducing). Everything you do is so you can be happy. Why would a theist want to go to heaven? To be happy. Why would a theist not want to go to hell? Because they know they would not be happy in hell. For many atheist like myself the meaning of life is happiness.

I love your quote. I am not an atheist although I don't believe that God is a person.

the meaning of my life is to do good and not care what i get in return. i do good because it helps somebody else, and you do it so "god" can reward you. you are the biblical meaning of a hypocrite. i want to make it out of this life knowing i changed peoples life for the better.

Life is meaningless until you remember why you came here. That can take a lifetime.
