My Kittens Eyes are filled with gunk?

The other day, walking down the street, I seen a box, didn't think much of it until I walked past and heard scratching.

I opened it up and there was a kitten. I have taken him home and I've estimated that he is around 4-6 weeks old. He has a bit of gunk around his eyes and I usually wipe it away, but it comes back quickly.

Is there anything I can do about it, or should I take him to the vet?

Keep in mind, I foubd him in an empty box on the side of a road and he was the only one there and he is soooo little

Update:

I've been giving him replacement milk, I'm a vet nurse (in training) and I've volunteered at Animal Shelters, so I do have experience with looking after abandon animals.

I've been wiping his eye with a warm damp gauze and it has been clearing up.

Also, to "♫♪♫♫♪" I have two other cats which I've had microchipped, had desexed and have had all their shots al at a cost of $90 for the male cat and $160 (I got them done at My Vet that i work for done it for half price) but you cannot give them stuff like that until they are like 8 weeks of age. The box was shut, there was no way others would of been able to get out and not this one.

I'm not taking it to a friggin shelter. It was abandoned once, I'm not gonna make it go through that twice.

I will take him to work with me and I'll get the vet to check it out.

Thanks to Rylee, Smoozie and Isabelle, you all had great advice but I will go with LOTR fan.

Cheers Guys!

Don't listen to Karen you don't need to take him to the shelter, shame on her.

But do take him to the vet, for his eyes and if he is only four weeks old he's going to need other nutrition then just cat food. He would still be on his moms milk at that age.

Regarding the eye infection, get an NFZ puffer, its a powder antibiotic, and you puff it into the eyes of a kitt with the discharge. It has worked extremely well for me for eye discharge type infections. Follow the directions. The only place I have found it is Tractor Supply, but surely someone else carries it. Its only seven bux. I have had vets prescribe terramycin , it works, but works much more poorly than NFZ. Also, nfz is for skin infections too. Its likely your kitt has a resp infection thats related to the eye problem. Its best to have a vet check them and see what the vet thinks about food for that small kitt.

Vet. He probably has some sort of infection. If he's really as young as you think then he also needs mother's milk substitute. He'll also need to be altered, disease, shots and everything else when he's a little bit older. You have $300-$400 for that? If not give him up to a no-kill shelter. You should also go back to where you found him. There were probably more kittens but they either fell or crawled out of the box.

My kitten has that too and we took him to the vet and they prescribed some meds and we just put lubricating eye drops in their eyes too

Sounds like he has an upper respiratory infection. That can be fatal if you do nothing, especially at his age.

He needs medicine to fight it off. I hope you can get there!
