TV Licensing enforcement process?
Hi all,
I'm a student currently living in private student accommodation, I have already filled out the online declaration form on the TV License website back in November stating that I do not need a license as I do not own a TV nor do I watch live TV. I then received a confirmation email and then thought nothing more of it.
However, today I received a letter saying that I have not responded to letters and that an officer will be visiting to check whether I would require one.
I do not understand this as I have already stated that I do not need one! Should I be worried about this supposed visit?
Any advice on what to do next?
Thank you very much x
Just to be clear I don't own a TV...

You don't need to own a TV. If you watch TV programmes on your computer (as a student you will have one) you need a licence if you are watching them live.

TV Licensing just keep on and on and on. They keep writing every few months because they have an obsession that everyone has a TV. Write back and tell them so, and also point out that you have not responded to letters because you have never received any.
I am getting fed up with this from other institutions such as banks who write to me saying that "we have been unable to contact you....".... well of course they haven't, because they haven't tried to, and if they had, they would have contacted me.
You have nothing to worry about. If they actually send an officer, give them a hard time and interrogate them about what are these letters they supposedly sent that you didn't respond to.

I do not doubt your word,if you have no television then let them come in a look, you could phone them once more and say you have filled in all the forms, but they may want to come anyway, they cannot believe people can live without a tv,but in these days of technology its not always necessary to have a tv, in the remote case that you do have a tv, have a friend look after it for a few days. If they come, and find no tv you have no worries.

Sounds like a routine notice, I wonder how many people pay up after receiving one of these letters? I presume enough to make it worthwhile to send them out.
Still if you do have a TV and someone comes round and discovers it you can't say that you weren't warned.
If you do have a TV either get rid of it now - as in sell/donate to charity or stash it with a friend. Do not think that hiding it will work.

These people are like the Gestapo - they are an absolute disgrace to the application of law and our right to enjoy our freedom. You are permitted in law to totally ignore a visit from them. you have informed them. This is not a Police State yet. They have no more powers than an ordinary person calling at your door. You have nothing to worry about and nothing to do. Just get on with your life.

If you are not watching live TV, then you haven't anything to worry about. You do not have to let the officer onto your premises. You could do just to show them that you do not have a TV, but they would need a warrant to force their way in if you did not.

Do you have a TV or use it? If you have one and use it, I would probably make sure its hidden away over next few days. If you don't own a TV then don't worry about it as then they know you don't have a TV (probably doing random checks)
