My first Lent in a long time?
I won't go into details but this is the first Lent I will be observing in a long time. I would like to give something up for Lent but I am not sure how to pick something. I was thinking like Starbucks or chocolate but I don't know if that's right. I would also like to fast but I was born with some low blood sugar health issues and it might be very unwise for me to fast. Does fasting matter? Thank you for any information.

Hey! No details necessary--welcome back!
Starbucks or chocolate both sound good. My daughter usually does candy. Whatever you choose, try to focus on the reason for the fast. Obedience for love of God is good, but effort to understand the reasons why will open the door for more grace... so to speak...
If you want some documentation on the "norms" of fasting:

Your health condition likely puts you out of the norms a bit, but I'm sure there are ways you can accommodate your health needs while still practicing discipline against earthly desires. As suggested by another, it's good to consult a deacon / priest if you have concerns. Also remember works of mercy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Works_of_mercy#Cathol... and prayer--especially efficacious during fasts. Just about every Catholic church will have the little books for Lent that guide you through good scripture verses as well--Christ's 40 day fast (Mt 4:1-11), fasting to combat evil (Mt 17:17-21), how to fast (Mt 6:16-18), etc. There's also a new free app with a Lent "challenge": http://www.truthandlifeapp.com/lent.html
Here's a quick overview of the practice of the Lenten fast:

You don't have to fast if you have health issue that make it unwise.
The idea of giving something up for lent just means you are giving up something that you would consider a sacrafice so Starbucks or chocolate are fine.
