Have you heard of changes coming to Y!A?

Within a few days there are a number of changes planned, among them only the Asker will be able to choose best answer. I believe this defeats the purpose of asking a question because unless the question is merely rhetorical (or a rant) the Asker does not know which answer is the best. Furthermore, I'm afraid that those who have a certain amount of experience or expertise and enjoy being helpful to others will see their time spent here as being wasted and leave Y!A, and what has been a useful site will turn into a cesspool of misinformation and snark. Am I alone in thinking this way or do others have a similar reaction?

Update 2:

I also noticed the voting and TU peculiarities that JenGen mentioned-- in fact I sent an email to Yahoo asking if there were some kind of glitch in the system. No answer.

Update 3:

Yum: Sorry, but sarcasm doesn’t further the discussion even though you did echo my darker thoughts.

Tashiemoo: I believe that questions seriously posed deserve thoughtful answers. If the Asker doesn’t choose a BA the question still remains for others who wonder the same thing. Without the Voters choosing, the question is less valuable to them.

Lizardmomma: I don't think Askers are any more likely to choose BA this way, and a multiplicity of voters will generally know more than the Asker.

Update 4:

JenGen: I shall probably give you the BA for having started with the same attitude as I did. Like you, I recognize some of the good points made by others. Don’t go away. If I can stick around so can you!

Mintchips: Do you believe a preponderance of TU’s have the same weight as a preponderance of BA votes? I don’t—TU and TD are given much more casually, for instance I almost gave Yum a TU for pushing a button I try not to activate! The multiple account holders will still stuff the box.

Update 5:

Which brings us to “Wonder Woman”, or whatever you are calling yourself today. If you could put some order to your scattered thoughts and present them cogently perhaps I could follow what you’re saying, but all I got from your diatribe is that you “really really wanna” get a Top Contributor badge. WHY? This is not a competitive game. Try thinking about the Asker rather than yourself. Some of these Askers are seriously facing danger and deserve better than your just wanting a TC badge.

    I agree with you 100%.

The best answer will nearly always be the most agreeable answer. I'll give it few days to see how it pans out but I'll probably stop helping on here.

I wish there was somewhere else to go that covers all forms of dance and not just ballet.

Later: What Mintchips and Lizardmomma say makes a lot of sense. I'll give it a chance. If a question never closes and more can be added then old questions will be spam magnets unless there is a system where newly added answers show up give to us a chance of reporting spam.

Just recently there has been some really odd voting with some answers getting 15 to 70 votes, sometimes mine, sometimes others including answers that were obviously rubbish. Perhaps that was Yahoo playing around with the system.

In other areas where I sometimes venture a toe I can see it being disastrous. For example the veg and vegan thread is haunted by trolls telling everybody to stop being silly and eat meat. The trolls will pile on with their thumbs as for some reason they seem to find non meat eaters offensive.

Later: If questions remain open so that you can edit after attention is no longer paid to them I see enormous problems with bait and switch. You make an innocent answer, come back and change it to spam later. I hope YA! have considered that.

I don't think it will be all that different, but I may be wrong. I still think there will be a lot who still will not pick best answer. That wont change. Those answers will never have a BA chosen for them. The ones that pick the answers they want to hear will still do that. That doesn't really change anything either. Instead of voting for BA you can express what you think by giving a thumbs up or down. The top rated answers will be on top.

What it will end is people getting best answer who have a ton of accounts by voting for their answer 25 times even if it is wrong just so they get points. So, perhaps it will end up being an improvement. Time will tell.

@JenGen- I know what you mean about the voting. I recently got 46 votes on an answer where I was the only answer. Another answer which was a nonsense answer got best answer with 40 votes over one of my answers which I think deserved BA. After all the answer "sfghi" doesn't really warrant a best answer now does it. Something weird is going on with the voting.

@Wonder Woman- How many times do we see "can I be a prima ballerina starting at age 14 with no ballet training and flat feet?" with a chosen best answer of "of course you can" instead of the reality they don't want to hear. When it comes to opinions, people are entitled to their own opinions but not their own facts. I believe that is what Zhops is getting at.

I disagree 100% because the whole idea of best answer is so that the asker can receive information that they find useful. When "voters" choose best answers , a lot of times, answers get chosen that don't even answer the question or "half a** the question". So this will give us askers the opportunity to take answers more seriously and choose best answers for those who deserve it. Not allow voters to choose the answer that is going to help them.

Sometimes, I'm not able to get on the internet all the time and I hate when I come on here and there's been a "best answer" chosen for me. More than likely its an answer that was sarcastic or just didn't flat out answer the question.

Your accusation of this is completely wrong. Y!A is only doing it for the better. If you know you're not going to choose BA for a question, don't even both to ask it on here. Search it in your search engine.

EDIT: This is also answers, given users on here to start taking the site more seriously. What's the point of asking a question if you're not going to let the person know that they are helpful by awarding someone best answer? This may also be a test for the Yahoo! Answers team to see which users on here are truly active with their accounts and who's truly taking it seriously. If they find that they are not , more than likely , they account will be permanently suspended.

SO with that said, this will actually limited the chances of spam If my previous statement is true. Also one more thing, with askers basically "being forced" (not really) to choose BA it will give other users on here an easier/quicker way to get a Top Contributor badge. B/c then that way you know that they actually "earned" the badge it wasn't just given to them by a bunch of voters. I'm sure I'm not the only one here who is working for their TC badge but never gets it b/c people are too lazy to choose BA for those who really deserve it.

Well, it may end up being a good thing as there wont be people voting for their own best answer in many accounts just for points. I don't think it will make people choose best answer. Some people ask, get the answer they want and just don't bother choosing a best answer as they just wanted the info and are not "playing YA." I do like the best rated being at the top but hope it just doesn't replace best answer by people stuffing the ballot box that way. Hopefully if points aren't involved they wont do that.

I must say that wonder woman must be using a different YA then I use lol.

  • How do you think about the answers? You can sign in to vote the answer.

Personally I think it might make people actually choose an answer instead of posting one and forgetting about it, which is what I think happens a lot of times. The people "voting" might not know what is the best either. I know that when I check to see which questions I get "best answer" on--I am checking to see if it was voted for or picked by asker and to me that does matter.

Do you really expect Yahoo to do anything useful or beneficial to the site? That's like trusting Google to not fuсk up Youtube anymore than they already have. The site "redesign" and various changes have already been detrimental or just plain stupid, but that won't stop them from further ruining the site. In the end this site will just be a "sterile" cesspool of ignored opinions and advice, enforced by the entitled and spineless that can't take anything harsher than feather to the wrist.
