How to properly clean my new coat?
I bought a new Calvin Klein lightweight trench coat for Spring. The shell and liner are both 100% polyester. It is water resistant. It is very nice. (Originally $170.) The tags say to wash cold and tumble dry low. But I am nervous about washing it in the machine. First of all, would I use my normal detergent? Won't it make the fabric weird? Or will it cause weird wrinkles? Is it OK to iron it? Could I dry clean it instead. Even if I can use the machine and an iron, is it a delicate process? I am a total klutz and I ruin everything. Would it be too far fetched to get it dry cleaned? Or would that be the safer option? As well, I've never dry cleaned anything (still a pre-professional). About how much would a coat cost for a basic clean and press? (At a small town dry cleaner)
Thank you!

Just follow the instructions on the tag. Use regular detergent, or you could use Woolite if you like. After the wash load is completely, promptly put it in the dryer. Once the dryer cycle is complete, remove the coat right away and hang it up. If it's a little bit damp, that's okay. You'll have more wrinkles if the coat sits in the washer or dryer after the cycle is complete.
If there's a belt, don't wash it in a machine because the buckle can break. Wash it by hand if it needs it.
Don't wash the coat until it needs it ... too much washing isn't necessarily good. Most coats only need to be cleaned once a season - before you store it away - unless there are stains.
I wouldn't use an iron on anything polyester unless the tag specifically says it is okay. I have a steamer that I use for a lot of things - like coats. You can buy one for about $35 at Costco and they work well on everything from tshirts to pants to sweaters.
Don't dry clean it unless the tags says to dry clean. Not all fabric dry cleans well. It would probably cost about $15 to dry clean the coat.
Really, the easiest way to care for your 'good' clothes is to hang them up when you get home - don't throw them on a chair. Things like dress pants and jackets should be hung up with a bit of space around them, for example don't cram them into a closet. Treat stains promptly, and use a clothes brush if necessary. It all sounds old fashioned, but those tips work.

If I were you, I would dry clean the coat to be safe. You can't go wrong with dry cleaning. It is an expensive coat and you don't want to mess it up or have it look all wrinkly.
