gun owner verses mental person?

I am thinking about buying a gun and getting licensed. The reason why is that my future brother in law keeps making threats on me and his family. In the last ten months, I've had to fight him twice and he lost pretty hard. That being a rare occurrence, it looks like he's testing his limits again.

He lives across the street and I often encounter him at his parents house where I tend his mother who is bed ridden. He is diagnosed bi polar and schizophrenia. I'm to the point that I can predict we are going to have yet another throw down this week or next. Not sure what its going to take to get the message across to him. Do I have the right to shoot him if I ask him to depart my presence when I'm working on this woman and he continues to challenge and provoke me?

Please get yourself a restraining order! Don't take the law into your own hands and become a vigilante. If you can sense a fight about to happen, dial 911. If you shoot a man who is deemed mentally disturbed, then guess who comes out wearing the handcuffs?

Calling the police or getting a restraining order is a much better option. You said he's your future brother-in-law. So you get your future wife, his sister, to talk some sense into him.

The only time you should pull the trigger is when you have very good reason to believe your life is in imminent danger, and fleeing and getting help is not an option.

Otherwise you are just opening yourself up to legal hell, both criminally and civilly.

Obviously you don't have the proper mind set to own a firearms licences. I am 18 years old have my licences and would never resort to shooting someone.

The guy has mental issues which you are aware of, and you plan on shooting him...???

I understand he probably causes you a lot of stress, but imagine if you were in his shoes. Just try to get along. Stop fighting.

If that doesn't work, your brother in law needs to be on medication, or get a restraining order.

No, you can't. You are putting yourself in this position, so if you shoot him, particularly after having asked this question in a public forum, it counts as premeditation. Also taking a gun into the presence of a mentally unstable person is a stupid thing to do, you could easily end up being shot yourself if there is a struggle.

He lives there. You do not. You can't make him leave his own house.

If you get a restraining order on him you will not be allowed to be in the house where he lives when he is there.

In order to use a gun you would need to be in great fear of losing your own life. Pretty hard to prove when you can beat him up in a fight.

Not a good idea to buy a gun with the intention of blowing somebody away. You would go to prison for sure in the event of a shooting. Find another way to avoid a confrontation.

You need to call the police and/or at least have a strong conversation with LE in order to secure your safety. There are too many crazy people out there, but don't consider a weapon until this issue is resolved. The purposes and motives in mind could get misconstrued and you could end up in more trouble than he. He needs to have the LE talk with them and discuss his behavior. Whoever this idiot is should be dismissed from the family, or dismiss yourself from the family. I did.

You will go to jail for a long time. His mother lets him into her house so he has a right to be there. You fought him twice and won so don't fear for your life. You will be charged with murder and probably convicted and go to prison.
