Did the men of old, Abraham, King David and such, believe that when they died they would go to Heaven?

Any Scriptures in the Old Text that says this?

Update:

Randy, I like that, let's add American Indians and Eskimo's as well.

What the men of old want to regain was what was lost by their forefather Adam - the paradise on earth that Jehovah had wanted for the whole earth.

They had no concept of life in heaven - that was not theirs to choose.

The heavens belonged to God, and the earth he had given to the sons of men. - Psalm 115:16.

This is not to say that the death of Christ did not play a part in opening up heavenly life for some.

But Romans 9:16 shows for a certainty that it is not an automatic gift of belief.

The gift God gives is everlasting life - Romans 6:23. It is up to Jehovah God whether that everlasting life is spent in heaven or on earth forever.

And who are we to question his decision in the matter?

Feel free to go out on JW.ORG and search for more information on this very subject.

No the scripture says they would sleep in death in She'ol-- the grave until they were resurrected. Ecc 9: 10 All that your hand finds to do, do with your very power, for there is no work nor devising nor knowledge, nor wisdom in She′ol, the place to which you are going."

Everlasting Life on Earth - For the ones to be resurrected to a new earth will be created and all God’s followers will live there

    Psalm 37:11

But the meek shall inherit the earth; and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.

    Matthew 5:5

Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.

    Isaiah 65:17

For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth: and the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind.

    Isaiah 66:22

For as the new heavens and the new earth, which I will make, shall remain before me, saith the Lord, so shall your seed and your name remain.

    2 Peter 3:13

Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.

    Revelation 21:1

And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.

Not only those but as already brought out true followers of Jesus believed in the resurrection of the last day (John 11:24)!

The scriptures teach a resurrection of the good(righteous) and the bad(unrighteous)- (Acts 24:15) and I have hope toward God, which hope these [men] themselves also entertain, that there is going to be a resurrection of both the righteous and the unrighteous.

Christendom's false clergy teach lies that the good go to heaven and the bad go to hell! (2 Timothy 4:3-4) For there will be a period of time when they will not put up with the healthful teaching, but, in accord with their own desires, they will accumulate teachers for themselves to have their ears tickled; 4 and they will turn their ears away from the truth, whereas they will be turned aside to false stories.

Here is a promise from one of God's angels to a man in favor with God

"9 Then he said: “Go, Daniel, because the words are to be kept secret and sealed up until the time of the end.....13 “But as for you, go on to the end. You will rest, but you will stand up for your lot* at the end of the days.” (Daniel 12:9, 13)

How about a good friend of Jesus? Let the record show the belief.

"Martha then said to Jesus: “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. 22 Yet even now I know that whatever you ask God for, God will give you.” 23 Jesus said to her: “Your brother will rise.” 24 Martha said to him: “I know he will rise in the resurrection+ on the last day.” (John 11:21-23)

From just these two accounts it is obvious no one of God's people had a hope of going to a heaven at death.

For @ Randy the atheist. Are you aware the Chinese character for ship is 8 men in a box?

No, they never had any such hope. They did have the scriptures from Genesis, which tells us what God offered Adam. It wasn't heaven or hell. Genesis 2:16,17.

There is a group of humans who have been selected to go to heaven and rule with Jesus, However, no one who died before Jesus can be in this group. Their hope rather, was to enjoy life forever on earth. They trusted God to resurrect them, knowing that He always keeps His promises.

It was a hotly debated item. It is clear none of them had the promise of heaven, but it is also clear that even David was not sure. In Psalms it can be seen that David believed dead was dead, but some of his Psalms hint that he hoped for more.

This debate was seen in the existence of the two major sects of Jews in the time of Jesus. The Sadducees who believe that dead was dead and the Pharisee's who believed in the resurrection of the dead. If it was a clear cut issue there would have been no debate.

No they beleived what was written in the scriptures of their time:

Ecclesiastes 9:5:" For the living know* that they will die,+ but the dead know nothing at all,+ nor do they have any more reward,* because all memory of them is forgotten.+ 6 Also, their love and their hate and their jealousy have already perished, and they no longer have any share in what is done under the sun."

Ecc 9: 10 All that your hand finds to do, do with your very power,+ for there is no work nor devising nor knowledge+ nor wisdom+ in She′ol,*+ the place to which you are going.+

No heaven or hell. Just about everyone went to a place of peace and rest when they died (Sheol). A person was rewarded with a long and prosperous life if he followed God's commandments. If he didn't follow, then life was not long and prosperous

The Ancient Jews did not have a heavenly hope. They did believe in a earthly resurrection, though.

Job, a faithful man from pre-Christian times, also looked forward to a resurrection. Unlike his false companions, who never mentioned the resurrection, Job drew comfort from this hope and asked: “If an able-bodied man dies can he live again?” In answer Job himself declared: “All the days of my compulsory service I shall wait, until my relief comes.” Addressing his God, Jehovah, he acknowledged: “You will call, and I myself shall answer you.” Concerning the feelings of our loving Creator, Job noted: “For the work of your hands you will have a yearning.” (Job 14:14, 15)

Yes. They believed, that their bodies would go to Sheol (The Grave) and their soul, if pure, would return to God.

Ruah means breath, or force, or life, or spirit...Ruah Hakodesh....Holy Spirit...God's active and moving force.

Oh and look in Isaiah and the Psalms
