My pet raccoon is wetting his bed after the death of our cat, is this grief?

I have a 12 year old pet raccoon who is treated like a child and I had a cat who had to be put to sleep yesterday at the age of 14 due to cancer of her mouth and she too was doted on like a child. I can home from the vet without the cats body, though I will be picking her up next week for burial, and the raccoon will not get out of bed...all day yesterday and all day today. I brought him a small sample of some of his favorite foods in the hope that he'd get up for dinner but he won't get up. I noticed today that he wet his bed at least once. So, does it sound like my raccoon is grieving? Is bet wetting a common issue for a grieving animal? He hasn't even gotten up to look for her so how can he know she's not coming back?

my guess is that your racoon is deeply missing it's family member

and is grieving as well as deeply stressed

inappropriate elimination is a common sign of a stressed pet

my mom took her older dog to be put down when he had cancer.. this was after hospicing him at home for the period of time he was happy & wanting to be around the other dogs

it was common for her to take one dog at a time to the groomer, so her leaving the house & returning home without him (at least for a few hours) was not at all uncommon

when she came home, her 2 other dogs started howling in a show of grief for their lost family member.. how did they know? I don't know but they did

if he hasn't gotten up to drink water by tomorrow and/or if he goes two days without eating.... then you need to take him for a vet eval

He could just know but you might want to get him checked out in case he is sick. He may have a urine infection or something and just bad timing that it happened now.

    I'm sorry for your loss.
