What is your opinion about spending 76 million dollars to make an anti suicide net on the Golden Gate Bridge?

Since 1937 suicides average 21 per year. Sad sure, but 76 million dollars coming out of the San Francisco district and funding for roads (California's roads are notoriously bad) seems a bad idea.

One woman's son who jumped off the bridge this past January said if the debate over creating some kind of barrier had happened sooner, her son would be alive. My take is if he was determined to commit suicide he would have just found another way. It may seem harsh, but 76 million? Why not use some for mental health intervention for all or assist the people struggling to survive (housing and food) in the San Francisco area?

Folks will climb down to the net and jump from there. All of this has been discussed for decades. It won't really help and it will make the most beautiful bridge in the world look like an old lady in a hoop skirt. Ugly!

  • Legal stuff.

As you correctly stated, people who want to commit suicide will do it one way or another.

The owners of the Golden Gate Bridge don't want to be liable for that. $76 million might appear to be excessive, but with the bizarre lawsuit culture that exists today, it's eventually going to pay for itself.

It sounds like a lot of money, but it is hard to make a decision without more details. How many attempted suicides are there every year, and how much does the city have to pay to mobilize rescue teams when there is an attempt?

How much do you value human life? Would that figure be the same if it were your brother or sister who wanted to kill him/herself? Or your parent or child?

Bet you will never know WHO gets that fat $$$ contract. (If it is a Democrat)

    Remember this about Ca:

That state, after 40 years of SOLID Democratic control was $20 BILLION in debt.

Just before the 2012 elections, CA got a whopping $20 BILLION for "mortgage relief"!

(So that Biff and Buffy could keep their $5 million insurance investment mansion on Landslide Ridge in Zippo Canyon)

Now... magically .. CA is 'out of debt' ...

Hummm .. Home of SOLYNDRA, too ... Hummm ...

People don't suddenly jump, they plan a jump to their death - so a net would just be a waste of money as they would plan a jump somewhere else!

That's morally repellant. And you don't sound at all sad about those poor people and that poor mother.

You're all disgusting. Are you even from Bay Area. It's nothing but wealthy people who can afford it just fine.

I've never understood why people are allowed to walk on that bridge.

    Stupid waste of money.

Put a bunch of photo ops around that golden bridge "caught/netted in SF" and the city can recoup that money in a year or two.

If it was my dollars,I'd let 'em jump.

Laws can be passed to stop the Lawsuits.
