Why is America more religious than other western countries?
Call me an ignorant Canadian. I'm currently dating a woman from Texas, and the conversation came up. I then looked at a few articles and documentaries discussing how there is a huge disdain for atheists in America.
I had no idea! I ignorantly assumed religion in America was like religion here... not discussed, a sin to even mention it in politics. I came across a few stats indicating that Americans in general are much more religious than Brits, French, Germans, Canadians, etc.
This intrigues me because of the relative parity of these countries in terms of education and standard of living. Why is America so religious in comparison to other western countries?

Oh wow, I've got a few tales to tell you, as a fellow Canadian, who also once dated a woman from Texas (And is currently married to a woman from Philly, by way of NY state and Florida). Been there, done that !
Yes, the religious climates of Canada and the US, and especially the southern US, are very, very different. Some of those differences can be seen in how often in the US, religion enters politics and political issues in ways that we really don't see up here. You don't see many, if any, Canadian school boards trying to cram religion into public schools, with a board member calling out 'won't anyone stand up for Jesus here ?'. The common culture of the US is dripping with religion as a basic assumption of life, in ways that do not apply to pretty much any other first world nation.
Canada and the US are VERY different places. And, religion is one of the biggest measures of that difference.

Religion has always been a part of the American culture.Founded on the ideal of religious freedom, the culture simply became more and more Christian based as more and more people from countries that didn't embrace religious freedom came here. Different culture, although the U.S. is slowly becoming less religious, I think it will take several more generations before we 'catch up' with the rest of the western countries in this regard.

I know religion is part of our speech or language, but I'd like to say a Godly Nation.
America was founded on that freedom, and one of the reasons she broke from the tyranny of England's rule.
One Nation, under God, indivisible with liberty and justice for all. That is why our Creator God has sustained America, because she put Him first. The immigrants came to a new land that gave them the right to practice what they believe is true, "God"! It is no longer that way, and will end in disaster because of all the politics and parting from our Creator God. That is why other countries are in disrepair, poverty, famine, desperate, etc., or have no protection, because they have left the High calling of God, and His laws for us to live safe and protected by Him. This have proven true since mankind have surfaced earth. (2 Chronicles 7:14 - If My people, who/which are called by My name, would humble themselves and pray, and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will for give their sin, and will heal their land.

Different countries have different cultures, you can't really explain it, for example in Canada apart from Christians who represent 67% of the population the country is otherwise not very religious with 24% of the population with no religion (Atheists), Islam by default is the 3rd largest religion in Canada, practised by 3.2% of the total population.

I think part of it is due to the fact that the US was founded on religious freedom which allowed religion to grow and thrive. I supposed you could also blame the education system and the fact that politicians keep sneaking pro-religion legislature through.

Freedom of religion explicitly stated in the constitution, giving a lot of leeway to crooks to create their little sect and defraud deluded people (and to actively delude people more).

It is more religious than SOME, but much less religious than many others. In fact, most Western nations are more religious than is the U.S.
