Are Atheists shunned in America?
I'm a Canadian guy that is currently dating a woman from Texas. She mentioned how it's a bit more religious down there, which I kind of suspected from Texas. But what got me is the perceived mistrust or even open antagonism towards atheists.
Up here it's not really a big deal. It's usually frowned upon to talk about religion in public, and it is an absolute sin in politics. Atheism is very common here, it's not very religious.
Is it the opposite down there? Are atheists shunned? Or is this maybe just a Texas/southern thing?

Depends on location and circumstances.
For example, I live in California. Everyone who doesn't live here usually thinks it's a bastion of "liberals and atheists." It's not.
I had a woman publicly demand I be removed as a little league coach a few years ago, solely because I'm an atheist. It's not like I went around making a point of telling everyone, or even ever said anything to the kids I coached -- she just noticed once that I didn't say "under god" during the pledge at the beginning of games, and went a bit nuts from there. Fortunately the league board wanted to keep a good coach more than they wanted to appease a religious nut. :)

In the deep south, they are somewhat shunned. (Mainly only in the states of Texas, Alabama, Louisiana, and parts of Tennessee and Kentucky). Otherwise people do not discriminate against any religion whatsoever. I live in Massachusetts and would say about 1/3 of the people here are atheists. They just don't mention religion, it isn't like anyone pushes it at all.

This is something that varies depending on the region of the US you are in. In the Deep south bible belt,or the Mid-West its usually a HORRIBLE thing to Be Atheist. While farther north or on the west coast this isn't quite as big of deal. Also, in Large cities there is less of a stigma against atheists.
My husband and I are not religious. We live in a small town in central PA and no one really cares. We get along well with our neighbors, we enjoy our community and we are involved, all without needing to have religion.

I'm sure they are. There are religious nuts who don't love and don't know how. I personally have met atheists who are good people and truly think they're right. I respect them as people.
Conversely, atheism has become aggressive and down right mean and after having had many closed-end discussions with many, I have found the ones on this forum have bigger issues than the fact they just don't believe in God. Their issues run deep and long and they can't be reasoned with. Many are just hateful and mean.

The lawyer Wendy Kaminer was exaggerating only slightly when she remarked that making fun of religion is as risky as burning a flag in an American Legion Hall.1 The status of atheists in America today is on a par with that of homosexuals fifty years ago. Now, after the Gay Pride movement, it is possible, though still not very easy, for a homosexual to be elected to public office. A Gallup poll taken in 1999 asked Americans whether they would vote for an otherwise well-qualified person who was a woman (95 per cent would), Roman Catholic (94 per cent would), Jew (92 per cent), black (92 per cent), Mormon (79 per cent), homosexual (79 per cent) or atheist (49 per cent). Clearly we have a long way to go. But atheists are a lot more numerous, especially among the educated elite, than many realize.

It's not really a problem here in California. I think the southern states would have the worst attitude from what some on my atheist friends tell me.

Texas and a lot of the south is really religious but most people don't care

I can't have a calm, serious discussion with my parents about any political or religious topic, because my mother will start crying because I'm an atheist.
Many evangelicals view subjects such as welfare, gay marriage, abortion, the "war on Terror", and government spending as essentially spiritual issues, where anyone who reads the Bible with a sincere heart will come to the same conclusions as most other conservative evangelicals. Politics here is often conflated with morality and whether or not one believes in God. And the most devout American Christians tend to be bigoted and socially conservative. http://mic.com/articles/29397/religious-people-ten...
So, yeah. It's bad here in the States.
