Since the founders of this nation were people of British descent, hardly. They used the language that was theirs by birth and ancestry.
Would you ask that question of the Australians? Or the Canadians? They have their own versions of English, too. Ultimately, though, there are very few differences in the Standard English of each country. The grammar of American and British English is the same. The only differences involve some spellings and some vocabulary.
By the way, the spelling changes spearheaded by Noah Webster actually had British precedents. Some words in British English had already dropped a "u," for example.

No. English speaking people went over to the new continent, and continued to speak English. The language underwent some changes on both sides of the Altantic, resulting in different accents, and some words having slightly different meanings. There was no hijacking, and nobody destroyed the language. It's still the same language, and nobody owns it.

Could be, most people around the world these days associate english with America rather than with the UK.... it's sort of like the Spanish language who was once one of the oldest and most important languages in Europe and now mostly associated with Mexico rather than with Spain where it actually comes from.

The United States? No. It was a colony of Britain that expanded into territories of the Spanish and French. Did Canada hijack it? Australia? Kind of a bazaar question.
