That's a good question & it's not easy to answer.
Most believe they are awake in life, but in truth we share collectively an agreed upon illusion of perception that some systems call a consensus trance.
To be awake is to break free of the shared delusions & illusions, to have clarity, & to begin to remember Self.
Many systems say there are no degrees, you are either awake or you sleep.
But here we experience everything as a process.
At first awake may be like lucid dreaming in our night dreams. We know that our perception has an overlay that covers clarity, but we are very aware that we are dreaming. In the end true & final waking up is Self Realization.
Many Blessings!

Someone not asleep!
Someone who is aware of itself and its surrounding.
One is aware if it is in the moment, neither living in the past or dreaming of future.
Not living in the past means, not utilizing the past memory in order to understand a thing. And not dreaming of future means not attributing more to what is seen at present.
In short: A person who is completely aware in the present moment is awake.
