Can sleeping in a basement cause health issues?

I'm au pairing for a French family and my room is in the basement, there is a small window that let's air in which I find helps at night so I will keep it open from now on, but I wake up with a tight chest, itchy throat and a runny nose and tears eyes. The room isn't damp or mouldy but there's something off about the air that I can tell is affecting me. What can I do?!

Ignore the asbestos/lead paint comments. Even if either of these are present (which they won't be), they wouldn't cause those symptoms.

Obviously something is affecting you. If the basement is dry, then fungal spores shouldn't be an issue. It may be something as simple as the washing power they use for the bedding. Is there any way you can get a through draught in the basement?

    1. Asbestos - have the owners had the basement tested for it (yes I'm being serious, not I'm not trying to scare you)

    2. If the house is old (1970s or before) the paint on the basement is more than likely lead based, and if it's flaking (which isn't always directly visible to the naked eye) this would be a health concern

    3. Flaking paint in general is bad - old paints were made from heavy metals (arsenic for green, cadmium for reds, oranges and pinks, lead for white (see above) etc.)

Ask the owner about the above things or any other structural or renovation conditions involving the basement, you have a right to know.
