Should I wait to be promoted to Sergeant in the Army?
I am currently a Specialist and have been for 6 months now. A couple of my buddies in the battalion are making their 5 soon and I have a couple of soldiers who are in their early 20s eager to make NCO; I think they're not mature (age wise) to handle such a responsibility, I'm 28 years old. I am also on my initial enlistment and was wondering if getting promoted as a 68W would have any hindrance for me getting OCONUS orders
I've actually heard horror stories of NCOs being kept in the same unit for years, even the same installation.
What do you guys think? Should I go ahead and strive to make points as soon as I can or just wait it out a bit?

You can only get orders for places where there is an open slot for your current rank at the time the orders are cut. If you get orders as a SPC but PCS as a SGT, that could for a short time have a negative impact on your career. You would be PCSing into a SPC slot instead of a SGT slot, which is not good for your NCOER. As a brand new SGT, that wouldn't have any lasting ramifications on your career. But for someone who gets promoted to SSG or above, it could have a serious impact. We recently has a SSG PCS to us and on her report date ito us, the SFC list came out and she was on it. When she gets pinned SFC, she'll still be in a SSG slot, which will be bad for her NCOERs.
There are some small units where getting promoted will delete your orders. A friend of mine is a SGT and had orders to Japan, so he declined going to the promotion board because if he picked up SSG, branch would cancel his orders, since there is no SSG slot at that unit.
And you're a SPC. You don't "have" any Soldiers.
And, while I'm thinking about it...if the only reason you decide to go for SGT is because of what possible CS orders you might get is, you're gong to be a horrible NCO. That is not the way for an NCO to be thinking - what can this rank do for you? No. It's what can your rank do for the junior Soldiers and your unit.

Troll there are no 28 year old Specialists! DAH! The only SPC that is 28 is a soldier that went active after being in the reserves for many years and a soldier that got an article 15.
