Since sin^2(x) + cos^2(x) = 1 (a proven trig identity) ,
cos^2(x) = 1 - sin^2(x).
Therefore cos^2(x) - sin^2(x) = 1 - sin^2(x) - sin^2(x)
= 1 - 2 sin^2(x)
