Can I give this to my 65 lb. 10 yr. old dog?

My dog is having terrible leg pain. Can I cut a 5/325 mg. hydrocodone/Tylenol tablet in half & give it to him? Our vet is not available until tomorrow & I don't want our dog to be hurting so much. Thank you for your help with this.

No. Dogs cannot tolerate Tylenol nor any of our human NSAIDS. I have seen dogs with bleeding ulcers from that. Also it could cause liver damage or kidney damage. Even one tablet can do that.

If your dog is having joint pain from arthritis, try to keep him moving. Help him get up by slinging a beach towel under his lower abdomen and lifting or assisting him. If he is sliding on your floors purchase throw rugs and runners for him to walk on.

You might try a little massage of a warm, damp towel to the joint. He may or may not tolerate it. A hot water bottle may help. Some people use orthopedic beds. Others use bedding that is heavily padded. Keep him off the cold, hard floor. Raise the food and water bowls up to his chin level for easier eating.

Tomorrow morning, call your vet and let them know he needs something. If you need help getting him out of the car, let them know so they can arrange to help you in the parking lot.

Start your dog on Omega 3 Fatty Acids and Glucosamine supplements.

If your dog is overweight, make sure you begin now to fix this. Change to a senior diet, which is lower in calories. Cut back on the food and treats. Weight-loss alone is the best single thing you can do for an overweight dog having joint pain. Your vet can tell you what your dog should weigh, but in general you should be able to feel the ribs without seeing them.

The nsaids for dogs are excellent. Our vets prefer Previcox, but there are others. Make sure if you get this to give on a full stomach every dose, which is once per day.

No, never give any kind of medication to you dog unless a vet specifically prescribes it for your dogs problem. If you do give your dog any medication and you give the wrong medication or the wrong dosage for your dogs weight, you will end up killing your own dog. How are you going to feel then? Are you really willing to be that stupid and take that kind of a risk?

If your dog is in pain, your dog needs a vet. Emergency Vets are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year including weekends and holidays. You are just not looking hard enough to find an E-Vet and your poor dog is the one who is paying for it. You cannot treat a problem, until you know what the problem is. If you really love your dog and you do not want him to be in pain, then do the right thing, look in the Yellow Pages under Veterinarians, find an Emergency Vet (again open 24 hours) and get your poor dog to the vet NOW. A vet is the one and only person you trust with your dogs care.

The vet will give your dog the proper and most effective medication he needs, depending on what the vet finds wrong. Not taking your dog to the vet when he is sick or injured, is Against The Law and Animal Abuse/Cruelty and Neglect and it is Inhumane to allow a dog to suffer in pain.

Now, get the thought of giving your dog any medication out of your head, get off your computer and quit wasting time and get your poor dog to the Emergency Vet NOW, so you can find out what the problem is, get it treated and eliminate your dogs pain. You are not being fair to your dog letting him suffer in pain and you never try to treat your dog yourself. Your dog is counting on you to help him. Do not continue to let your dog down, by not getting your dog the medical help he needs.

If he was my dog, I would have taken him to the vet the second I noticed that something was wrong and would have had the vet do whatever is needed to get him feeling better and out of pain. If there is one thing that really breaks my heart, it is seeing an owner Neglecting their dog by not providing their dog with medical care, when their dog is clearly in pain and a vet is the one and the only person who can help him or her.

    No.

First off, you don't know if the meds are safe for the dog.

And, believe it or not, you want the dog to be hurting if he is injured. If he hurts, he won't move around and injure himself more. If you give (safe) pain meds before finding out what's wrong, he will feel better and could ignore the pain, bounce around and injure himself more.

I know it's hard watching them in pain, but it's only for one day until you can get him to the vet.

If you're truly worried about your dog, take him to an emergency vet, other wise, hold off on giving anything until your regular vet can see him.

This is not a drug that would work well for a dog. contact your vet and get your dog on a veterinary glucosamine supplement to help build strong ligaments. Veterinary pain meds are to be used only sporadically, not on a daily basis. Keep your dog moving but please contact your vet. There are many meds that can help him......Hydrocodone and Tylenol is not one of them It's the human generic for Percocet.

I wouldn't advise it, you honestly shouldn't give human medicine to animals unless advised, try wrapping his leg loosely with a warm towel, if you can get him to lay down enough, it should help relax him and make it hurt less, and simply comfort and stay with your dog for a while, unless he begins growling or things like that. Your presence should help calm him down and make him feel better.

NO! You NEVER give prescription meds, especially HUMAN meds, to a dog UNLESS your vet has told your butt to! I'm so very sorry for you that you are totally void of common sense and this is common sense sh*t!
