What should I do in this situation regarding work and driving to a class with driving phobia?

I have an anxiety or phobia about driving ever since I was in a car accident last two years ago. I was pregnant at the time and luckily the baby was fine. He is almost two years old now. So anyway I was invited to this class that I really want to go to for work. It will involve a promotion too. However they want me to drive 2 hours there and this is the problem. I don't have a babysitter yet. I don't know if I should postpone the class or not go. I don't want to drive 2 hours with the baby and look for a babysitter for two weeks there. What do I do? Should I go or postpone? I have no one yet to take care of the baby while I am gone because my husband is a truck driver and out for weeks at a time. Any advice?

I used to be a truck driver. 4 years, and over a half million miles of safe driving. No accidents, no tickets.

This is what I learned about truck driving. ALL truck driving companies (no exceptions!) treat their drivers like slaves. Example...if you are *allowed* to take a 10-hour break to reset, your dispatcher will REQUIRE it. At first glance, this seems like a good idea and a safety first type of attitude. But here's the problem. You can't take MORE than a 10-hour break. And as you can't drive more than about ~10 hours either...

This policy essentially turns a 24 hour day into a 20 hour day. So...as if your job isn't hard enough, now you have to deal with ROTATING SHIFTS.

And never make the mistake of telling your dispatcher that you have to be home for a special reason (like your MOTHER DIED, for example). Suddenly they will find NO loads. Not just loads headed toward home...they won't find you ANY load...

I could go on and on about the billion ways they will f*ck you when you are a truck driver...

But basically, ANY job is better than being a truck driver. Even working two full-time jobs at wal-mart or home depot or similar (pay and hours would be about the same, and you'd be home more)

Having been a truck driver, I have a unique perspective on this "question". My point of view? If my wife had a chance for a promotion and all she had to do was knock out a 2-week class...

I'd come home for two weeks. I'd do that even if it meant losing my job as a truck driver. It's not like you couldn't get ANOTHER truck driving job on a few seconds' notice anyway...

Run the idea by your husband. See if he will come home for two weeks to watch the baby. As for the two-hour drive...see if you can stay in a cheap motel for a couple of weeks...or just M, T, W, THursday...

And have your professional driver of a husband drive you there and back. :)

Have a relative (your mom or sister) come stay with or keep your baby while youre gone & take the class. To postpone wont be to your advantage if youre looking for that promotion. As it shows your superiors you have the fortitude to go the extra mile. If you must take the baby with you & start looking for a reputable sitter service ASAP.

Sounds like it just isn't going to work out, I know it sucks but the issue is having child care and sounds like you don't . You might just have to tell the boss the situation and explain that although you are honored to be invited, you just simply can't right now .

Does your work require you to bring a car? If not, I recommend that you use a service such as Lyft or Uber to get you from point A to point B for cheap compared to a taxi. Also you could always take the bus. I hope this helps and good luck!
