Can an employer force an employee to work a 1 hour shift? I live in Florida..?

here's the situation, it's a part time driver job for a national auto part store that I took for extra income.. I like the job and it helps get me by some financially but it's not a high paying job, I only make 8.50 an hour.. I was hired under the terms I work 8 hours shifts 3 days a week. I work elsewhere too so this schedule fitted in perfect with my current schedule..

This sunday at 7am (memorial day weekend) the manager called for a mandatory meeting of everyone who works in the place. It wouldn't be a problem but I live 25 miles away.. So it's a 50 mile round trip which will cost me probably more in gas then I'll actually make for that hour.

Isn't there some sort of law to prevent this kind of corporate bullying?

    In Florida mandatory meetings can be held up to once a month and they have to pay you for the time you were there. No more. No less your travel time is not a factor in determining the legality of this. Your manager is an utter and complete bunghole for calling a meeting on a three day holiday weekend. But there is nothing you can do.

    It is not corporate bullying and, by law, you should be paid for four hours, not just the 1. Four is the minimum. Anyway, your complaint is unjustified even if they are not paying you at all. It is part of having the job. Why would you accept a job 25 miles away when you are only earning $8.50 an hour? Couldn 't you find anything nearer to home?

    You don't have to go. But you can be fired for not going. Your choice. Why on earth would you take a second job 25 miles away? That makes no sense whatsoever.

    This is particularly bad management, but probably not illegal. Companies do this all the time. This is why we need Democrats in state legislatures to pass worker protection laws.

    You will need to check your labour laws.

    Some areas require a minimum four hours pay when called in.

    Not illegal at all. They have to have staff meetings, and no matter when they have them, they will be inconvenient for someone.
