What small tree or large shrub should we plant?
We live in GA. The area in question is on a slope. On the back side is our bedroom; on one side is the retaining wall at the end of our house; one side is to our patio, and the front side slopes down into our back yard. We are wanting to block the view to the house next door. In winter, this area is completely in the shade, but in summer it's total hot GA sun! I have used banana trees and sunflowers with success during the summer, but of course there's nothing there in winter. We are looking for a small tree or large shrub to block the view. Something that's easy care, able to withstand the cold without sun, but also able to take the 100 degree hot sun in summertime. Thanks!

Crape myrtle doesn't grow in the shade....
Everybody plants azaleas in the shade, and... They're kinda passé'.
Other possibilities include camellia, and Florida anise, and if you are in north ga, possibly even rhododendron. I've seen rhododendron growing successfully in Macon ga.
And... There's always Rose of Sharon, if you want more bloom.
Depending on the amount of shade, you might also consider wax myrtle...
It would help a lot... If you mentioned whether you are in north ga, or south ga, whether you have a deer problem, what the soil is, (clay? Sand?)
Also consider growing shade loving perennials...

It'd be better to plant a large shrub; so that you'd have favourable conditions for it's growth as well as your convenience and ease.

Crepe Myrtle. They tolerate heat and dryness, nothing eats on them and they will still have enough branches in winter to block most of the view. They don't tolerate extreme cold too well but that is zero deg. For a week or so. In Oklahoma ours have died back maybe once in the last 30 years.
